Bury Town Under-23s v Leyton Orient U23/18s
Bury Town U23s (like their opponents mixed with Under-18 players) played their first ever home game against a mouthwatering opponent, with Orient being a League 2 side two seasons ago, but now in the National League. Bury Town U23s edged their Leyton Orient counterparts 3-2 in a fairly even pre-season friendly.
Leyton Orient had the first chance on 2 minutes, as following a counter from the visitors' their No.7 shot straight at Bugg, from the right edge of the box. Two minutes later, Bury responded, as Robinson chipped a teammate through on the left wing, but his colleague shot straight at the keeper. Robinson then had a shot from a free-kick, just outside the box with eight minutes played. However, his effort curled just over the top left corner.
Four minutes later, and back came Orient, as a corner on the right was whipped in low to their No.9 at the near post. The forward then turned and shot towards goal, but was blocked. On the sixteenth minute, Orient had their next shot deflectes over the right corner, as they hunted an opener. Which, despite their efforts, it was the home side that opened the scoring, 8 minutes later, as Tommy Robinson won the ball in midfield, before going on to play a one-two outside the box. Robinson then received the ball back inside the box, before cooly slotting into the bottom right corner to give Bury the lead.
On 24 minutes, Josh Revell picked up possession in midfield, before charging upfield, he then tried his luck from 30-yards out, but saw his shot blocked by a defender, making it easy for the 'keeper to gather. That was four minutes before, a Bury corner on the left was touched towards goal, at the near post, where (unfortunately for Bury) the 'keeper gathered the deflection towards goal, just ahead of Manu for Bury. Half-an-hour in, and Bury were awarded a free-kick just outside the box, in a dangerous central position. Robinson took it, but got too much power on it, and skied it over the bar. However, Bury doubled their lead on 32 minutes, as a Bury free-kick was distributed onto the right wing, where Bury's No.9 squared it towards the back post, where Manu tapped it into the bottom right corner, first time, with ease. Two minutes later, the two goalscorers linked up well, as Robinson picked out Manu on the left, thanks to another clever ball over the defence, but the forward could only shot straight at the 'keeper at his near post.
On 37 minutes, Manu got through on the right, for Bury, but was brought down 30-yards from goal, but the resulting kick was cleared by the visitors. Four minutes later, Robinson cut the ball back into the box, from the left byline, but his teammate's shot was easy for the keeper. However, thanks to great buildup play from Bury, the hosts won a corner on the far side. The delivery picked out Josh Revell at the far post, whose header was easy for the 'keeper to save. Two minutes before the interval, Orient's No.10 went for goal, spectularly, from outside the box but could only volley over the top right corner. Orient then had the only booking off the game, as their No.5 was shown a yellow card a minute brfore the interval, following a dangerous challenge. Bury went into the interval with a 2-0 goal advantage, thanks to well worked goals from Robinson & Manu.
HALF TIME: Bury Town Under-23s 2-0 Leyton Orient U23s/18s
Bury started the second half strongly, as Robinson set the Bury No.3 through on the left-hand side of the box, but Orient intercepted the pass and cleared, with just 4 second half minutes gone. On 51 minutes, Leyton Orient pulled a goal back, as a corner from the right was partially cleared by Bury, before a Bury player accidentially diverted the ball to the opponent, who (from around 12-yards out) forced George Bugg into a good stop, as he dived to his left to keep the ball out well. However, the rebound fell to an Orient player, who was in the right place, at the right time to tap home to make it 2-1. Four minutes later, Tommy Robinson looked to restore Bury's two goal lead, as his dangerous low ball towards the near post (from the left byline) ended up going just wide off the post, where Orient hacked the ball away to safety.
On 57 minutes, Bury went inches close to going 3-1 up, as Bury's No.4 raced into the box on the left, before shooting towards the far corner, only to see the ball go not far wide off the post. Two minutes later, Orient nearly gifted Bury a third goal themselves, as a miscommunication almost lead to an own-goal, but the 'keeper stretched a foot out to get to the pass-back. Three minutes after the hour mark, Orient had another shot towards goal, this time from the right side off the box. However, their No.11's effort was blocked well by Charlie Hughes. Seconds later, though, Orient were level. A ball through the defence (which their player looked to be offside), found a forward, who dispatched the ball into the bottom right corner. Back came Bury, on 68 minutes, as Tommy Robinson found Manu free on the left wing, who then cut inside the box.
Unfortunately for Bury, the Number 10 could only fire his shot over the bar. Bury retook the lead, though, four minutes later, as Manu's cutback on the left byline was deflected behind for a corner. Where the set-piece was headed towards the target, at the far post with Ollie Fenn on hand to turn home the rebound. Sixteen minutes before the end, Bury had an effort blocked from the edge off the box, but went off the home player, and went out for a goal-kick, with the Blues determined to regain their two-goal advantage.
Orient continued to try to level the scores, once more, on 76 minutes, but fired their latest shot over the bar from distance. Back down the other end, where Robinson fed a teammate outside the box, who then picked out another on the right-hand side of the box where the 'keeper was forced to block the shot with his feet at his near post. With ten minutes to go, Bury continued to hunt a fourth, to make the game safe, as the No.17 volleyed over the far from outside the box. The visitors put hearts in the home support's mouths, as they went marginly close, two minutes later, with their No.9 firing wide off the bottom left corner from 18-yards out.
With 86 minutes played, an Orient counter-attack saw them shoot at goal from just inside the Bury box, but could only force Bugg into a routine scoop dive save. Straight away, Bury tried a counter off their own, but Manu's shot from the left-hand side of the box was straight at the 'keeper. Bury then had the final chance, with 3 minutes to play, as a cross from the left was turnes goalwards at the far post, but the keeper saved diving down to his right. Referee, Dion Thorpe soon blew his whistle to indicate full-time, as Bury ran out, deservedly 3-2 winners after a tight encounter.
