Bury Town Under-18s beat their Felixstowe & Walton United counterparts 2-1 at Denny Bros Ram Meadow to end their pre-season with a win in a tight, competitive, entertaining friendly.
The visitors had the first opportunity on 3 minutes, striker Josh Lee picked up possession on the right hand side in the box but shot low and wide of the bottom far corner. Two minutes later, Felixstowe then swung a free-kick into the box from the right over to the back post, where it was headed dangerously across the face of goal where Bury’s No.6 was able to clear. Nine minutes in Bury were awarded a penalty, as Mohammed was hauled down on the right in the area, a minute later the striker stepped up himself to dispatch a superb curling spot-kick into the bottom right corner, sending the keeper the wrong way, 1-0 Bury. Bury then went close to doubling their lead on 13 minutes, as a good long goal-kick from the Bury keeper set Amin Mohammed through down the right, the Bury goalscorer then squared across the box to find No.11 in the centre, whose low shot in the area was easy for the keeper to gather down to his right in the centre of his goal. Bury then went close on 14 minutes, as a long range shot hit the top of the crossbar and over for a corner, after the keeper tipped it over. Bury then had another close chance on 18 minutes, Aidan Browne’s free-kick on the left edge of the box was swung into the far post, where the huge congregation of players all failed to make contact, as the set-piece went just past the right post. The Blues then had a great chance to score again on 21 minutes, as Browne’s free-kick again on the left wing, this time around the half-way line found Mohammed in the centre, who then set No.7 through on the right in the area- the latter’s shot from a tight angle though went over the top near corner.
Felixstowe were then awarded a penalty of their own on 26 minutes, as Josh Lee got through in the area though Bury’s No.5 slipped and tripped up the Felixstowe striker as the ref pointed to the spot. Lee took the spot-kick, but was denied by a superb save by the keeper, down to his right to palm away. Lee’s low cross shortly after from the right byline then went dangerously across the face of goal and narrowly wide of the far post for a goal-kick. On 27 minutes Felixstowe then had a good chance to score, as a shot from outside the area was blocked before another low low strike from outside the box was saved comfortably by the superb Bury keeper down to his right. Two minutes later, Josh Lee again raced through on the left hand side inside the box, this time though was halted at the left byline by Bury’s No.5, who intercepts it behind for a corner. On the half-hour mark, the Blues’ stopper was forced into another good save from the resulting corner- getting down low to his left to palm away the header at the far post. Soon after, Felixstowe then thought they’d drawn level, after finding the bottom right corner, but was ruled out as the ball had gone behind for a goal-kick. Then on 32 minutes, the Bury keeper was brought into action once more, as a cross in from the right found Josh Lee at the back post, as the striker leapt above No.2 from behind to head low towards the bottom far corner from 4-yards out. The keeper though was up to the task, reacting instantly to dive down and across to palm the ball away.
A minute later meanwhile, Felixstowe then had a low shot at goal only to hit just wide of the bottom right corner. Ten minutes before the break, Felixstowe drew another great stop out of the home keeper, Felixstowe’s free-kick on the left edge of the box curled over the wall and down to the bottom right corner, but the keeper met it well diving down to beat it away. On 38 minutes, Felixstowe’s No.2 was next to go for goal from the left edge of the box but shot low and wide of the bottom far corner, with the visitors continuing to hunt an equaliser. Four minutes later, Bury went close again as Mohammed turned past his defender well from 18-yards out, before jinking inside another defender on the right to shoot low at the bottom near corner, the keeper though did well to deny the striker with his leg. A minute before the break, Bury had another chance, as Mohammed picked up possession again on the right inside the box, only to see his shot deflected behind the near post for a corner. From the set-piece, Bury went close again, the ball in finding No.4 from close range who manages to get a shot off towards the bottom right corner, but the keeper got down well to beat it away. Shortly after which the half-time whistle went, as Bury led 1-0 at the interval.
HALF TIME: Bury Town Under-18s 1-0 Felixstowe & Walton United Under-18s
The second half started with Felixstowe hunting an equalising goal, as the visitors shot just over the top left corner a minute after the restart. The Seasiders then won a corner in on the left on 49 minutes, which was swung into the near post, where it was tapped towards goal but was blocked off the line. Felixstowe then went close on 50 minutes, as the away side squared a dangerous pacy ball across the face of goal from the left, but was watched all the way by the keeper- as the ball went through the box with nobody around to tap in for the visitors, who then shot over the bar soon after. Four minutes later however, a Felixstowe cross in on the left found a man at the near post, to flick a header on towards goal, though it was a routine catch for the Bury keeper at his back post. Felixstowe then went close on 56 minutes, as a fierce shot on the right hand side in the box thundered wide off the outside of the near post. Five minutes later though Bury went close once more, Amin Mohammed was set through in the area, drawing the keeper off his line, the goal scorer’s shot beating the keeper but hit the base of the right post. The ball then rebounded hit the leg of the defender running back, but stayed out of the net, the keeper then rushed back to gather as he swerved around on his line, with the ball sat right on the goal line.
On 66 minutes Bury went close again, as the Blues’ No.8 did well on the right wing to beat the defender sliding in to put a low cross into the six yard box, where a Bury man picked up possession but just couldn’t get his shot off. Felixstowe though drew level two minutes later, a shot on the left inside the box was volleyed towards the roof of the net at the near post, just beating the keeper who could only push it into the net, 1-1. With 19 minutes remaining, Felixstowe’s Charlie Hughes drew another good save out of the Bury keeper. The visiting player’s shot from the left edge of the box was curling towards the top near corner until the Blues’ stopper did well to dive up and beat it behind for a corner, before the away side’s No.2 had a shot from 30 yards out on 73 minutes, but shot straight at the keeper. Three minutes later however, a Felixstowe free-kick on the right edge of the box was sent curling towards the top far corner, but went over the bar. Then came the winning goal ten minutes from time, after Amin Mohammed was brought down just outside the box, the ball broke kindly for Finlay Plant, who was just arriving on the scene, as the 20-yard cracking fierce strike fired into the bottom right corner, leaving no chance for the keeper, as Bury regained the lead, 2-1.
In response, the visitors had a low shot on the right on 83 minutes, but was blocked away at the near post. Two minutes later, Felixstowe’s No.17 then hit a free-kick from 30-yards out on the left low and straight at the keeper at his near post. Bury then had the two final chances of the evening, the penultimate of which falling on 87 minutes, as Aidan Browne’s free-kick from 25-yards out on the left was shot towards goal at the near post but went straight at the keeper. Three minutes later, Bury then went close again, Amin Mohammed was once more set through down the middle in the area, the keeper though came out to meet him on the right, as the striker’s low shot went underneath the keeper but just beat the bottom far corner. The full-time whistle though soon followed as Bury ran out 2-1 winners, ahead of their league opener at home to Mildenhall Town at Ram Meadow on August 19th.
