My Season Review 2018/19 Part 100: January 2019 (Game 115)

Needham Market scored a late winner to snatch a vital three points, to see the Marketmen rise up to places to seventh- one behind opponents Biggleswade Town to keep their playoff hopes alive.

It was the home side who had the first opportunity, Luke Ingram was set through onto the right edge of the Waders' box but saw his low drive at goal go just wide off the left post on 7 minutes. Four minutes later, Biggleswade had their first opportunity, as Jonny McNamara was teed up on the edge of the box- only to shoot low and straight at Jake Jessup in the Needham goal. The away side then had the next few chances, the first of which fell on 13 minutes- Kieron Forbes going for goal from the left edge of the box. However, his low strike was deflected straight at Jake Jessup. The next Biggleswade chance came two minutes later, as the visitors shot low and wide off the near post from the right edge of the box. 

Jonny McNamara then had the third of the string of Biggleswade chances, this time though shooting from the left edge of the box but was again deflected straight to Jessup at his near post on 16 minutes. The penultimate of these chances for the away side then came on 17 minutes, as a cross in on the left was put wide off the top left corner by Peter Clark. The Waders then went very close to going in front on 19 minutes, as a powerful shot on the left byline in the area by McNamara hit the outside off the far post and bounced away to safety. Back came the Marketmen however, Reece Dobson shooting low from 20-yards out on the right, but firing straight at Sam Donkin in the visiting goal on 20 minutes. Next to shoot at goal, were The Waders, as a shot from the left edge of the box went wildly over the top far corner on 25 minutes. In response, the home side had a great chance to take the lead themselves on 27 minutes. Top scorer Joseph Marsden with a great cross in on the right narrowly evading the heads of Adam Mills and Luke Ingram in the centre, as well as just avoiding Callum Sturgess running in at the far post. The Reds then had another good chance after 31 minutes, Jake Jessup's ball downfield was flicked on by the head of Luke Ingram into an offside Adam Mills through on goal- but his stab towards goal was blocked by the chest of the onrushing keeper, with the free-kick awarded for offside anyway. Shortly after that though, the Marketmen whipped a cross into the box on the right, as Jack Bradshaw at his near post chested the ball towards his own goal but was fortunate that it went straight to Sam Donkin. The home side had another great opportunity on 38 minutes, Adam Mills' great cross-shot on the left going just wide off the top far corner. 

There was still time in the half, for one last chance for each side, as Biggleswade's corner in on the left was put wide at the far post on 40 minutes, before the Marketmen had another close encounter three minutes later. Adam Mills was set through one-on-one in the box on the left, with the winger's low shot hitting the inside off the far post and away to safety. That was it for the first half, as the score remained goalless.

HALF TIME: Needham Market 0-0 Biggleswade Town

Overall the home side controlled the majority of the second half, but did begin with Biggleswade forcing Jake Jessup into action on 48 minutes. Dylan Williams' low shot on the right hand side in the box, with the Needham stopper getting down and across well to his near post to palm behind for a corner. After that, Needham did well to restrict Biggleswade to very few major chances in the second half, and created some very good ones of their own. The first seeing a cross in on the right find Luke Ingram at the far post, who attempted a spectular overhead kick but just missed the ball. Again the Marketmen went close on 55 minutes, Joseph Marsden's shot on the left wing hitting the far side off the crossbar, and over for a goal kick. However, Biggleswade created four more chances thoroughout the remainder of the evening, the first on 57 minutes saw Jack Bradshaw's free-kick from distance deflected behind the right post, for a corner off a Needham player. The visitors then had a decent half chance with 25 minutes to play, after getting to the left edge of the box- the away side fired comfortably over the top far corner. The Marketmen then found Luke Ingram through on the left byline in the box with 21 minutes to go, but could only guide the ball at Donkin who palmed away- at his near post. Needham then had another good opportunity once more, on 69 minutes. The corner in on the left found Luke Ingram at the near post, whose header towards goal was parried away well by the keeper positioned well, standing at his near post. Donovan Makoma then tried his luck from the right edge of the box after 70 minutes, but saw his shot deflected over the top far corner for a corner. As the game entered its final 17 minutes, the home side won another corner on the left, as Luke Ingram once more got a head on it at the near post, this time sending it towards the top left corner. However, a defender was on hand to deflect it just over his own bar for a corner. The Needham man then tried his luck from the left edge of the box, only to see his shot blocked.   

The Marketmen then found James Baker through in the box, with 16 minutes to go, as the Needham defender/striker (defender when covering at centre-back) saw the keeper smother his effort, with the rebound falling into an area where a Needham man was running into- but jut couldn't make contact. On 79 minutes, Matthew Ball had a go from long range for Biggleswade, as his shot dipped towards goal but was straight at Jake Jessup- who plamed it away. Up the other end, six minutes later, Needham substitute Jamie Grffiths laid off the ball to Luke Ingram just inside the ball to have another go at goal. However, the latter's low strike was dragged wide off the left post. The Marketmen though did find a winning goal on 90+3 minutes, the hosts corner in on the left found Jamie Griffiths at the far post who headed towards the bottom right corner and into the net, despite the keeper getting a hand to it- which after the hosts' second half display was more than deserved. That goal could well prove to be vital in the play off race. However, there was still time for Biggleswade to look for an equaliser, as the visitors had a shot bloced from the left edge of the box six minutes into stoppage time. With the follow up from the same area being deflected just wide off the far post. 

The full time whistle sparked jubilation for the home support, as the Reds kept up their hunt for a play off place.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 99: January 2019 (Game 114)

Bury Town Under-23s maintained their record in scoring in every home game in their first Isthmian Development League season, after Harry Brown’s late winner ensured all three points for the fourth place Blues. The Blues, who remain unbeaten in home fixtures this season, beat tenth placed opponents Bishop’s Stortford 4-1 away from home earlier this season- and the score line could’ve easily resembled that here. 

Bury didn’t take long to begin firing at goal, immediately firing over the top far corner from the right edge of the box- just seconds in. Back came Bishop’s though, firing over from the left edge of the box on 2 minutes. Bishop’s No.7 then tried his luck from the right edge of the box, a minute later, but saw his shot blocked. Bury man Charlie Cook was next to go close to scoring on 5 minutes, shooting just wide off the top near corner. The Blues then won a free kick from 25-yards out on the left, after 13 minutes, but ends up going way over the bar. The action continued, as Bishops fired comfortably over the top far corner, on the left, on 16 minutes. Back came Bury though, as Emmanuel Machaya won back possession in the visitors’ box. The striker then shot low at goal, but was kicked away by the keeper on 17 minutes. Four minutes later, the Bury number nine again had a go at goal- this time shooting low from close range on the left side in the box. Once more though, the keeper saved with his feet at his near post. The home side however, kept up their search of an opening goal, as Bury shot wide off the far post from the right, on 26 minutes. 

Down the other end, on 27 minutes, Bishop’s then had a go at goal themselves- shooting low on the left side in the box but was denied by George Bugg catching down to his left at his near post. Four minutes later, Tommy Robinson went agonisingly close to opening the scoring, shooting from the right edge of the box but curling and dipping just wide off the near post. Bury though were denied again on 40 minutes, Emmanuel Machaya’s shot from the right edge of the box again saved low by the keeper at his near post. Seconds later, Bury went close again from a Tommy Robinson free-kick from 20-yards out. The Bury midfielder curling just wide off the near post. Back came Bishop’s though, who should’ve scored, No.9 set through one on one but blazing over the bar, with George Bugg rushing out to narrow down the angle on 43 minutes. Emmanuel Machaya then did well to get down the left wing and into the byline in the penalty area, however the keeper narrowed down the angle well at his near post, to block the shot on 44 minutes. The Blues still had two great opportunities to go in front at the interval, Bury flashing a dangerous free-kick in from the left wing across the face of goal- but Bishop’s headed it away on 45 minutes. 

The second meanwhile, fell two minutes into added time, as skipper Lawrence Porter headed just over the top right corner from close range. The centre-back’s chance ended a goalless first half, that could’ve easily have been a goalfest. 

HALF TIME: Bury Town Under-23s 0-0 Bishop’s Stortford Under-23s

The second half was literally more of the same, as both sides went close numerous times, before Harry Brown’s late screamer sealed the win for the home side. The Bury striker had the first opportunity of the half on 49 minutes, as Brown blocks the keeper’s clearance with his head- with the loose ball bouncing behind the keeper, who recovered well to gather just before Brown could take advantage of an open goal. Again Bury went close on 54 minutes, as the Blues’ free-kick was sliced by Bishop’s No.2 back towards his own goal, with Harry Brown running in to chase but was beaten to it by the keeper. Bishop’s then countered down the other end a minute later, as Bishop’s on the left lobbed the ball over George Bugg with the ball bouncing on the line before hitting the near post and bouncing away to safety. The home side then went narrowly close to going in-front on 57 minutes, going for goal on the edge of the box but were denied once more, as the keeper dived up superbly to tip past his top left corner. On the hour mark, Bury went close again as Charlie Cook set Emmanuel Machaya through with a superb lifted ball over the top. The latter‘s low strike from the edge of the box however, was palmed behind his left post by the diving keeper. 

As Bury continued to go close to an opening goal, Branham Ince swung in a free-kick on the right wing, with 25 minutes left to play. The right back’s ball into the back post though was headed wide. Bishop’s then had a half chance to going ahead themselves, the visitors’ cross in on the left was bundled wide off the left post for a goal kick on 70 minutes. Down the other end, Harry Brown again had a go at finding the Bishop’s net, this time shooting from the right edge of the box, the Bury striker saw his shot deflected wide off the far post, with the keeper able to gather- on 71 minutes. A minute later, the Bury forward went even closer, as Bury increased the pressure on Bishop’s goal- shooting on the left side in the box but just wide off the far post. Stortford then could’ve taken the lead themselves on 73 minutes. The away side squaring in from the left wing, with the shot at the open goal cleared off the line by Joshua Revell. Bury then countered up the other end, with Harry Brown’s shot from 18-yards being parried away by the keeper. 

The away side then set a man through the defence on the left side in the box, forcing George Bugg to come out well to block the low shot with his hand- only to be offside anyway on 77 minutes. The Blues went close again with 12 minutes to go, as Emmanuel Machaya squared across goal from the left finding Harry Brown two yards out. However, the striker’s touch went straight to the keeper. On 79 minutes, Bury kept up the hunt for what proved to be the winning goal, Charlie Cook curling just over the top right corner. Seconds later, Tommy Robinson was the next to go for goal as the midfielder lobbed the keeper but also just beat the right post. The home side then had slight appeals for a penalty waved away, when Emmanuel Machaya went down on the left side in the box but was waved away by the referee on 80 minutes. 

A minute later though, Stortford had a go at goal, on the left side in the box but hit low and wide off the near post. Back came the Blues however, Harry Brown shooting low and wide off the left post from 18-yards out on 84 minutes. Next to go for goal, was Bury forward Emmanuel Machaya on 86 minutes. As Machaya got through on the left wing and cut into the box, the number nine then shot low at goal but was put behind his near post by the keeper. With the game entering stoppage time, it was clear one goal would decide this thriller, with chances still coming- Bishop’s firing over from the right side in the box on 90+2 minutes. Two minutes later, there was still time for both sides to find a winning goal, Stortford’s number fifteen has the freedom of the box but hit just wide off the bottom right corner. Bury then countered down the other end and got that deserved winning goal, Harry Brown finding the top right corner to superbly settle the game in the Blues’ favour. Brown’s late cracking strike also meant that Bury maintained their home unbeaten league record, with just one game at home to go (home to Haringey Borough on February 11th).

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 98: January 2019 (Game 113)

Game 113: Sunday 27th January 2019, Gainsborough Plating Fields, 12:30pm, Ipswich & Suffolk Youth League U18 Division, Bury Town Under-18 Saints v Thurston FC Under-18.

Bury Town Under-18 Saints defeated Thurston FC U18s 3-0 at Gainsborough to extend their lead to 6 points clear at the top after 7 wins and 1 defeat.

A game in which Thurston rarely threatened Connor Reynolds' goal began with the away side, who sit bottom with a single point this season as Thurston's No.4 got through to the left edge of the box on 2 minutes. The shot though was straight at Bury's stopper Reynolds. The Blues then went for goal themselves from the left edge of the box but shot straight at the Thurston keeper on 14 minutes. The hosts then had a half chance on 15 minutes, which saw a Bury ball in on the left find Oli Selfe 18-yards out. The striker's flick on though went straight to the keeper.

The visitors then had a rare opportunity, No.10 having a shot blocked from 25-yards on 17 minutes. Buty then went close on 23 minutes, as Selfe got down the right wing with the ball squared in finding Hodgson sliding in six yards out. However, the Blues No.7 just missed the ball. Thurston had another chance, as a header at the top left corner from inside the box- was easy for Reynolds, on 25 minutes. Bury then opened the scoring two minutes later, captain Sandry getting through on the left side in the box before shooting at the bottom right corner. The defender though blocked the shot but kicked it inadvertly into his own left corner. On 37 minutes, Thurston whipped a corner in on the right, with the attempt at the near post going wide. Back came Bury though who thought they had doubled their lead on 38 minutes, Ty Hodgson sending Oli Selfe down the middle and through on goal. The striker though found the bottom right corner from range, but was dubiously ruled out for offside.

Harvey Sandry then whipped a corner in on the right, but was headed wide at the far post on 42 minutes. Two minutes into added time though, Thurston went close to equalising and won a corner on the left, as Sturgeon at the near post deflected the ball towards his own goal. However, Connor Reynolds though was on hand to jump up and superbly tip over the bar. The resulting corner into the far post, however was villeyed over the bar. That was it for the first half, as Bury lead 1-0 at the break.

HALF TIME: Bury Town Under-18 Saints 1-0 Thurston FC U18s

Bury began the second half looking to extend their selender advantage, which they did two minutes after the restart. Adam Lopes chipping a superb ball over the defence to Tyreke Langford Fox on the left in the box who picked out the botyom far corner. Will Green then got through to the right byline in the area for Bury a minute later. Which just as the right back went to shoot the defender was on hand to concede the corner. Ryan Proctor then went for goal on the right side in the box, whose shot was saved well by the stopper to his right on 49 minutes. The rebound though, saw Fox have an open goal but somehow miss a sitter, skying it over at the left post- from 3 yards out. Fox then had a shot on the edge of the box blocked on 54 minutes, as the Blues kept the pressure on. Four minutes later, the hosts got their third goal as a corner in on the right was tapped in at the far post by sub Joe Hogg from point blank range. The aforementioned goalscorer tried his luck again on 61 minutes, as his low drive from the left edge of the box hit the leg of the keeper- attempting to dodge- with Elmeades onto the rebound. The latter though shooting at the top middle sector of net, only to be denied by the keeper tipping over- redeeming himself. Although, the scoring wasn't added to Bury had a shot blocked on the right side in the box on 62 minutes- before the hosts were forced to defend well.

With 25 minutes to go, Thurston's free-kick on the left wing towards the far post seeing sub Suckley head clear. The rebound well being volleyed wide off the far post from 25-yards. Thurston then went for goal on 67 minutes, with the shot from range straight at Reynolds.

Arguably Bury should've been 4-0 up, as Sandry's cross in on the right found Elmeades at the far post who missed the target, with 20 minutes on the clock. The two sides then had a chance each as the game came to a close, Thurston going first with No.6's shot from the right edge of the box being blocked on 75 minutes. Bury sub Harry Elmeades went for goal on the left side in the box, but shot straight at the keeper, three minutes later. That opportunity was the last notable bit of action, as Bury Town Under-18 Saints ran out 3-0 winners.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 97: January 2019 (Games 111/112)

Games 111/112: Sun 27 January 2019, Hardwick Heath Pitches 1 & 3, Bury & District Premier Logos Sunday FL Divisions One & Four, 10:30am KOs, Morten Hall Youth FC Ferals v Tostock Pirates (Pitch/Div 1), Bury Wanderers v AFC Elmswell (Div 4, Pitch 3)

Fith placed Morten Hall Ferals, who fielded a side low on numbers, battled well against Division One leaders Tostock Pirates who ran out 2-0 winners thanks to Barnard and Beeton's goals on Pitch 1. Meanwhile over on Pitch 3, Bury Wanderers drew 3-3 with AFC Elmswell in Division Four including a smart finish from captain Kalum Benham.

For the record, the two games kicked off 2 minutes apart- with the Ferals clash with Tostock getting underway at the earlier time of 10:28. Despite the efforts of the Ferals, there weren't many occasions where Steve Fenner was forced into action, as the hosts did well to hold off Tostock's pressure until midway through the second half. It was Tostock who had the opportunity to get through on the right side in the box- but shot low and wide off the far post on 4 minutes. Having said that though, the Ferals did get forward quite often but didn't manage many attempts on goal.

Over on Pitch 3 on 7 minutes, Bury Wanderers went infront. The Blues ran through on goal one-on-one with the keeper. The Wanderers man scoring a screamer into the top right corner, with the keeper off his line. Elmswell then looked to react soon after, sending an effort wide of the left post a minute later.

Although Tostock and Ferals played out a fairly level first half, the Pirates did create a chance on 10 minutes. Sam Goodard's cross in on the right found Welford at the far post, who chested the ball towards goal but was easy for Ferals' stopper Fallows. Whilst neither side could yet find the net on pitch 1, Elmswell grabbed an equaliser on 10 minutes- firing into the bottom right corner from close range. Back on Pitch 1, chances began to come as Tostock's Theo Barnard got down the right with ease, twisting and turning in the box. The low shot though went just wide off the bottom left corner on 13 minutes. Three minutes later, Todtock went close from a cross in on the right. The ball in ending up going just wide off the far post. Hall though did have opportunities, as Frost-Palmer's free-kick on the left edge of the box curled over the wall and dipped onto the top right corner, on 18 minutes. However, Steve Fenner was on hand to take a routine catch. Ferals skipper Charlie Larter then went for goal on the right from range, on 20 minutes, but shot wildly over the bar.

Over to Pitch 3, Wanderers tried their luck at goal in search of regaining the lead. The shot though went wide off the right post on 20 minutes. Two minutes later though, Elmswell forced Bury keeper Clifford into action- as a free-kick on the edge of the box was hit low and was kicked away by the home stopper. The rebound though forced Clifford to stab wide off his own left post. As the action reached 26 minutes on Pitch 1, Ferals centre-back Callum Dongray had a go at goal from the edge of the box- but saw his shot blocked. The rebound though was shot at goal, but was also blocked. The league leaders then countered down the other end as the visitors' effort was deflected well by Frost-Palmer straight to Fallows. Next to try his luck, was Ben Newdick for Ferals- whose shot from 20-yards out on the right went low and wide off the near post.

Whilst the fifth placed side and division league leaders were deadlocked in the first half, Bury had their second goal (and the third of the game) to retake the lead on 29 minutes. Captain Kalum Benham smashing a great strike into the bottom left corner. Meanwhile, Ferals had another shot at goal, as Larter's shot on the left hand side in the box was blocked on 33 minutes. Frost-Palmer then had a free-kick three minutes later on the edge of the box, which like the earlier setpiece the Ferals' man sent his freekick curling and dipping superbly to the top left corner. Once more though Fenner got across well to catch the strike.

Back came Tostock though, who had a shot blocked from 6-yards out on 37 minutes. From a free-kick Tostock then had a go at goal, shooting straight at Fallows on 43 minutes. Two minutes later, Will Stobbart was next to have a go from the edge of the box, but went just wide off the right post. Down the other end, Lewis Kemp tried his luck from the right edge of the area- but again shot straight at Fallows. That concluded the first half action on Pitch 1, as Ferals and the Pirates went in deadlocked at the interval. Meanwhile, due to Wanderers kicking off slightly later, there was time left in the half for Elmswell to grab an equaliser, heading into the net from close range on 44 minutes. They could've been in front at the break as well, after spotting Clifford off his line the away side shot but was blocked by a defender on 45+1 minutes. That was it, as the two sides went in 2-2 at the interval.

HALF TIME: Morten Hall Youth FC Ferals 0-0 Tostock Pirates (Pitch 1), HALF TIME: Bury Wanderers 2-2 AFC Elmswell (Pitch 3)

On to a second half (with kickoffs at 11:20 on Pitch 1 and 11:24 on Pitch 3), where there weren't too many report notes (ended up kicking a ball about towards the end due to the cold). Elmswell starting the half firing off target on 49 minutes. Over on Pitch 1, Tostock were denied by a superb stop by Fallows on 54 minutes. The Ferals stopper palming a shot on the right behind for a corner well at his near post. The Pirates though did open the scoring in the Division One clash, as Theo Barnard picked out the right corner on 68 minutes.

Ferals though were not prepared to lie down, Frost-Palmer having a shot blocked in the area on 71 minutes. Seconds later, the hosts had a good chance to level. A free-kick on the left was whipped into the box, where Callum Dongray at the far post headed across- but was caught well by Fenner, off his line to intercept.

After 70 minutes on Pitch 3, arguably Elmswell should've added to their tally, a cross in on the left finding a man at the back post who tapped wide off the target. Although the visitors will rue missed chances, Elmswell did show good determination to level in the last ten minutes through Ryan Jolly, to ensure a share of the spoils. Whilst  that clash ended up 3-3, there were still more notable chances on pitch 1.

All of which fell the way of Tostock, who this season hope to dethrone the current three in a row champions Gym United, but only added one extra goal to their advantage- after winning the reverse fixture 5-1. The first of those chances falling to Theo Barnard on 79 minutes, as the goalscorer's shot on the right side in the box was palmed away by Fallows. Six minutes later, the Pirates sent the second chance just wide off the right post.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 96: January 2019 (Game 110)

Game 110: Saturday 26 January 2019, 3pm, Evo-Stik Southern League Central Premier Division, Bloomfields, Needham Market v St Neots Town

Match Programme

A resilient performance from struggling St Neots Town beat Needham Market thanks to their skipper and ex-Bury Town man Russell Short's cracking strike in the second half, at Bloomfields.

St Neots did have a few first half chances, but arguably could've been behind at the interval. A game of which was frustrating from the Marketmen, who will rue missed chances and were unable to make one count. However, three minutes in St Neots did go close- sending a low driven shot on the right side in the box just wide off the far post. St Neots then had appeals for a penalty turned down, five minutes later, after a foul on the right. 

Back came the Marketmen though as, despite having an off day, skipper Gareth Heath's cross in on the left wing saw James Baker challenge for it at the near post just six-yards out. Finley Iron however, had other ideas- the St Neots stopper (on-loan from Cambridge) diving forward to punch away. The home skipper then whipped in a low cross in on the left, seven minutes later, as the hosts put wide at the near post from 8-yards out. 

St Neots then won a corner on the left on 20 minutes, which was shot at goal but was blocked away from goal. The Marketmen then had a great chance to go infront on 25 minutes, Reece Dobson on the right edge of the box lifted a great ball over the defence to Adam Mills on the far side in the box. The winger, back from a two game suspension, though headed wide off the left post from three yards out- only to be offside anyway. The home No.11 was then set down the left wing 12 minutes before the break, who squared the ball into the area as Luke Ingram picked up the loose ball on the far side in the box. Ingram's touch through towards goal saw the winger get to the ball himself, and aim for the top left corner. His shot though was denied by a great diving stop by Iron, pushing the ball upwards. The falling ball then being slapped over his own bar by the Town 'stopper, as Needham wondered how they weren't ahead. The Marketmen should've scored again on 38 minutes, having a shot blocked from point blank range. Next up, was a half chance for Needham, with a free-kick on the left wing in his own half. James Baker's flick on on the right edge of the area though bounced in the box and was easy for Iron. Adam Mills again whipped in a great cross in on the left wing on 45 minutes, which with Luke Ingram running in at the far post forced captain Russell Short to head behind his near post for a corner. The resulting set piece in on the left though was sent towards goal at the near post, but was blocked from six yards out. That was it for the first half, as the two sides went in goalless. 

HALF TIME: Needham Market 0-0 St Neots Town 

The second half began with St Neots going close straight after the interval, legging it through down the left wing, before setting a man through on the near side in the area. The first time shot though went wide off the near post. Nine minutes later, the opening goal went the way of the visitors, as a long throw on the right found Short on the near side in the box- whose cracking strike picked out the far corner superbly, to be fair a deserving matchwinning goal.

The Marketmen though did respond, and went close on 61 minutes- with left back Callum Sturgess shooting into the left sidenetting. Needham Man Of The Man Keiran Morphew then prevented the away side from doubling their lead on 70 minutes, after a long throw on the left headed at goal at the near post. The Needham centre back though headed the effort off the line. 

Jacob Joseph then tried his luck with a half volley at goal on the right on 71 minutes, but narrowly shot wide off the far post. Back came the Marketmen, five minutes later as Adam Mills' great cross in on the left found Luke Ingram in the middle. However, the Needham man's header went just over the top left corner. As the hosts' hope of equalising faded away, Luke Ingram had the second of two great chances in sixty seconds (the first mentioned above). This time Ingram was set through one-on-one with the onrushing Iron as the Needham forward blazed over the bar. Once more the Marketmen went close from a Gareth Heath corner on 79 minutes, putting the set piece over at the far post. 

On 83 minutes, St Neots won a dubious free-kick on the left edge of the box, after a foul by Keiran Morphew, but curled the strike over the bar. Back down the other end, a late Needham rally began with substitute Jamie Griffiths crossing in on the left. The forward's ball in found top scorer Joseph Marsden at the back post who shot just wide off the top left corner. At that point it began to feel like it wasn't to be Needham's day, as Marsden fired another shot just wide off the top left corner- from the right edge of the box on 87 minutes. As desperation kicked in for Needham, Jamie Griffiths shot on the right edge of the box was blocked on 88 minutes. Following that Needham did have the ball in the net, Callum Sturgess' cross in on the left was flapped away by Iron. Griffiths though was in the right place to nod the rebound at the bottom left corner, from six yards, but was cleared off the line. The follow up though was fired in, as the goal was ruled out for a foul on Iron. 

As the game reached 90 minutes, there was one last opportunity for Needham, with Marsden getting through to the right byline. The man with 13 league goals this campaign then squared the ball in but was blocked by good St Neots defending. At the final whistle, St Neots picked up a vital three points, on a frustrating afternoon for Needham.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 95: January 2019 (Game 109)

Game 109: Sunday 20 January 2019, 2pm, Bloomfields 3G, Suffolk Womens and Girls- Women's Division, Needham Market Women v Chantry Grasshoppers 

Needham Market Women thrashed Chantry Grasshoppers 20-0 at home to keep the pressure on leaders East Bergholt. 

The Marketwomen went infront inside 15 minutes, scoring direct from a corner on the left. It could only get worse for Chantry from then, as Needham doubled their lead on 15 minutes. The hosts through down the middle one-on-one with an easy passed finish finding the bottom right corner. A minute later, it was 3 for the dominant hosts. A cross in on the left found No.9, whose deft finish found the far corner. That was then extended to 4-0 on 19 minutes, an easy pass from the right byline in the box set up a simple tap in from 7-yards out at the far post into the bottom right corner. It was high fives for Needham on 23 minutes, No.7 was fed on the right side in the area, whose shot rebounded off the bar which was tapped into the empty net- from a yard out at the back post. 

Talk about relentless in attack, the Reds found No.10 in space on the right side inside the box on 26 minutes. The shot however went wide off the top right corner, with the loose ball falling to Needham often in a game controlled 90% by the home side. Two minutes later, the rampant Reds went close again- No.8's low shot on the right edge of the box going wide off the near post. Another great chance for Needham fell on 29 minutes, as a home player was set through on the left byline whose chipped cross was touched towards goal at the near post, but was cleared off the line. The hosts then won the ball back soon after, but shot wide off the right post. On the hour mark, the Marketwomen had another shot on target, from the left edge of the box but was parried away by the keeper. 

Chantry then had their only effort on target in the afternoon on 34 minutes, as a cross/shot on the left was caught well by the home keeper. Back down the other end, on 36 minutes, the Reds went close again as No.14's corner on the right was headed onto the bar from close range at the far post. A minute later, the hosts tried their luck from 20-yards out but shot over the bar. Six minutes before the break, Needham set a player through the defence, who ran down the left and into the box. The keeper then came out to close down the angle, as the Needham player touched past the keeper, but just the wrong side off the left post under pressure from the defender. 

Seconds later though, Needham had 6 goals, as the Reds got to the right byline to square across the six yard box, where it was comfortably finished into the top right corner. It was 7-0 on 40 minutes, No.14 was set through one-on-one on the right side in the box as the keeper came out to close down once more. This time though, the Needham 14 touched it passed the keeper and blasted the ball into the bottom left corner from close range. Three minutes before the interval, it was 8-0 Needham as No.10 was set down the right and got into the box. The ball squared in fell to a home player who tapped in off the left post past the diving keeper. The lead was almost 9-0 on 43 minutes, as No.14 was again set through one-on-one down the right, who rounded the keeper but the tight angle was too much. The shot hitting the outside off the near post and out for a goalkick. On 44 minutes, Needham then struck an effort wide off the near post on the left, before No.14 was set through onto the right side in the area. This time however, the keeper stayed strong to rush out and get a strong foot to tackle fairly. A minute into added time, Needham crossed a low ball in on the left as No.4's shot was blocked away well. The first half damage was not over yet though for Chantry, as Needham made it 9-0 on 45+2 minutes. No.14 was again set through on the right side in the box, leaving an easy finish past the keeper and into the bottom right corner. That concluded a nine goal first half, where there was more to come in the second. 

HALF TIME: Needham Market Women 9-0 Chantry Grasshoppers Ladies

Needham Women almost got their tenth goal, a minute into the second half. A corner in on the left was shot at goal at the far post but was cleared off the line. It was 10-0 though on 47 minutes, the great shot hitting the left post and going into the right corner. Then on 48 minutes, Needham went close again as No.4's low shot on the edge of the box went wide off the left post. A minute later, another chance fell for Needham. This occassion, the shot on the right outside the box was caught by the keeper. 

On 50 minutes, a Needham shot on the edge of the box forced a great diving save by the keeper, palming away down to her right. Despite that save, Needham made it 11-0 on 51 minutes, a fantastic long range shot on the left picking out the top leff corner to extend the lead even further. This match had long became a training session, the way in which the Reds continously got through on goal. Again, Needham got a shot at goal on 52 minutes, from the right edge of the box. The attempt though went just wide off the near post. Another truckload of good opportunities fell Needham's way, with the first on 54 minutes. The Reds through to the right byline in the box but shooting into the sidenetting. The second coming a minute later, as the shot on the edge of the box hit well towards the top right corner- but was palmed away by the keeper. Up to next to try her luck at goal, was Needham's No.16 on 57 minutes. The shot from the right edge of the box going low and straight at the keeper. The Marketwomen then had another shot on target on 58 minutes, this time the attempt from distance going straight to the keeper. 

Seconds later, Needham had another shot on the right side in the box. However, although the shot was blocked from close range, the ball fell to No.7- whose shot on the rebound was also blocked. On 59 minutes, Needham made it 12-0 as No.14's cross turned shot on the left wing going straight between the Chantry keeper's right arm and head to add to the ever growing goal tally. A reoccuring theme thoroughout the afternoon, was the Reds scoring goals in quick succession adding to the goal fest that was witnessed. This continued on the hour mark, for goal 13, Needham getting through down the centre and placing into the bottom left corner. It was then two goals in two minutes, as it was 14-0 on 62 minutes, No.14 again in the box on the right with a good neat finish from a tight angle into the bottom left corner. Make that three goals in three minutes, as No.15 made it 15-0, a fantastic unstoppable strike on the left edge of the box going in off the underside off the bar and into the net. However, the next good effort from the same area dipped superbly towards the bottom far corber- but was caught well by the keeper on 64 minutes. 

With 25 minutes to go, Needham's No.7 (with goalkeeping shorts on) went for goal on the right, but shot low and wide off the near post. On 68 minutes, Needham had 16 goals, No.18's shot on the left byline- in the box- finishing low and well into the net. As twenty minutes remained on the clock, Needham had another good chance. A corner on the right was headed over tge top right corner- with the keeper rooted. The Reds then went for goal again on 71 minutes, with the shot on the right going just wide off the near post. Seconds later, Needham's No.15 went for goal on the left towards tge bottom near corner, but was palmed behind well by the diving keeper. Needham again had a good chance to get their 17th goal, this time a cross in being flicked wide off the right post. With 18 minutes to go, Needham went close AGAIN! No.18 got through in the box, as the substitute stabbed the ball past the onrushing keeper- but was cleared off the line at the right post by a defender. That still wasn't the end, as Needham's No.4 went for goal from the right edge of the box. The curling shot, on 75 minutes, towards the top right corner easy for the keeper. The seventeenth goal then came on 76 minutes, as a shot on the right side in the box was finished easily into the bottom left corner. With 10 minutes left, the Reds went close again. Another Needham low cross in on the right found a player in acres of space at the back post, but shot low and wide of the left post. It was 18-0 on 82 minutes, as a Needham shot was saved, with the rebound shot finding the bottom left corner. The penultimate of the twenty goals then came on 84 minutes, as a outstanding strike flew into the top right corner. Seconds after that, the rout was complete. Needham through two v one in the box, squared across in the box- beating the stranded keeper. Leaving an easy finish into the empty bottom right corner. With four minutes left, a Needham corner on the left found a home player- but saw their shot blocked. The hosts then had another shot in the penalty area, shooting wide off the left post. 

On 87 minutes, the hosts got through in the box yet again, with the ball squared across shot at goal. However, was palmed behind well by the diving keeper down to her right. Needham then had another shot blocked by a Chantry head on the edge of the box, on 88 minutes. As the rebound on the right- from close range- somehow hit the near post with the follow up blocked. Still chances came Needham's way, but just couldn't take them. The latest chance falling on 90 minutes, the long range strike going straight to the goalkeeper. The Reds then intercepted the keeper's drop kick out but the shot to lob the keeper went wide off the right post (on 90+1 minutes). The final chance fell on 90+2 minutes, the hosts through again on the right side in the area with great pressure from the keeper forcing the shot into the sidenetting. That finished off a goal fest, of which all 20 going to the impressive Needham Market Women.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 94: January 2019 (Game 108)

Game 108: Saturday 19 January 2019, 3pm, Evo-Stik Southern Central Premier Division, Arden Garages Stadium, Stratford Town v Needham Market

Needham Market lost 3-1 away to Stratford Town in front of 201 in attendance.

Despite the defeat, the Marketmen did have chances of their own to go infront- although Stratford did dominate the possession for the first half. The home side went close just a minute in, a low shot on the left edge of the box forcing Jake Jessup to dive down to his near post and palm away. The rebound though, fell at an unguarded far post, with the attacker unable to finish. Back came the Marketmen, who had a half chance on 8 minutes, Joseph Marsden's cross on the right wing going over the top right corner. The Suffolk side then went close on 12 minutes, captain Gareth Heath's corner on the left was swung in brilliantly to Jamie Griffiths from six yards out, who headed just over the top left corner. Another Needham chance then came on 15 minutes, Reece Dobson setting Joseph Marsden down the left wing, who ran through to the left edge of the box but shot low and well wide off the near post. Stratford then had two opportunities in three minutes, with the first falling on 18 minutes, the corner in on the left hitting Jessup's chest in the Needham goal- on the goalline. The second opportunity though, saw Oulton's low shot from the right edge of the box go just wide off the far post.

Needham then had a fantastic chance to go infront on 24 minutes, Reece Dobson was set through down the middle one-on-one in the box. However, the defender tracked back, forcing the Needham man to beat him- however the shot at goal towards the bottom right corner was palmed away well by the reflexes of the diving keeper, for a Needham corner. Stratford then turned up the pressure, with an effort at goal on the left hand side in the box. Jessup though gathered the attempt as a man slid in to pressure on 27 minutes. The home side then twist and turned on the edge of the box on 30 minutes, but shot wildly over the top right corner. Stratford then shot at goal from 18-yards a minute later, but slipped in the process with the off target effort blocked away. Town again had a half chance on 34 minutes, this time flicking a free-kick on the left wing wide at the near post. 

Six minutes before the interval, Stratford broke the Needham resistance, with Jake Jessup on the left side of his own box he then kicked the ball straight to a Stratford man. Although the stopper got back in goal he was unable to prevent Nabil Shariff from finding the bottom left corner for 1-0 Stratford. It was then 2-0 on 45 minutes, the hosts corner in on the right went over the Needham keeper's head on the goalline as Jordan Williams bundled it in from close range at the far post. Jamie Griffiths then had a decent chance to pull a goal back on 45+1 minutes, through on the right side in the box the striker flicked at the open goal but hit the sidenetting. That concluded the first half, with it all to do for the Marketmen.

HALF TIME: Stratford Town 2-0 Needham Market. 

The Marketmen though began the second half much better than the first and did have chances to pull more than the one goal back. Four minutes after the break, Reece Dobson's cross in on the right found Joseph Marsden in acres of space, whose great header towards the bottom left corner was palmed away well by the diving keeper. Stratford however, did have chances to extend their lead as they hit an effort on the left-hand side in the box over the bar on 53 minutes. 

It was 3-0 Stratford though three minutes later, as the hosts' left winger and full-back had an easy task of crossing in from the left- with just Dye to beat. Carvalhos' cross in found Shariff in acres of space at the back post, who had the easy task of nodding into the bottom right corner to pick up his second goal. That goal got Stratford tails up, as a shot on the left side in the area was denied by Jessup at his near post on 73 minutes. Needham though were awarded a penalty on 77 minutes, after Jordan Williams fouled in the area- before Kamanzi had a shot blocked. Up stepped club top scorer Joseph Marsden to net his thirteenth goal of the league campaign to dispatch the spot kick with ease, into the bottom right corner- sending the keeper the wrong way. Stratford then appealed for a penalty themselves on 80 minutes, but the tackle was perfect from the visiting defender on the right. Barcelos then attempted an overhead kick on the left side in the box, but sailed over the bar on 87 minutes. The Marketmen though went agonisingly close to a second goal, with the last chance of the afternoon. Needham corner in on the left finding Keiran Morphew running in at the near post, but hit the face off the bar. That was that, as Needham embarked on the 2 and a half hour journey home after defeat.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 93: January 2019 (Game 107)

‪Game 107: Monday 14 January 2019, 7:45pm, Denny Bros Ram Meadow Stadium, Isthiman Bluefin Development North League, Bury Town Under-23 v Barking Under-23.‬

‪A fantastic end to my birthday at Bury, as the Blues showed great resilience to arguably outclass their Barking counterparts. ‬

‪Bury Town Development maintained their unbeaten home record after a determined 3-1 success over their Barking counterparts. A game that saw Bury stacked up against it at times led to gutsy determination from the Blues end up worthy victors, after being left with ten men for the best part of an hour. It was the hosts that started brightly as a superb cross in on the right from Branham Ince narrowly missed the head of Emmanuel Machaya at the near post on 6 minutes- and went just the wrong side of the far post.‬

‪Six minutes later though, Tommy Robinson was surronded on the edge of his own box by Barking players before Uddreen's shot towards the bottom right corner was palmed behind by George Bugg. Emmanuel Machaya was then denied by the keeper on 21 minutes, getting on the end of a ball into the box at the left post, only to be kept out well by the legs of the keeper.  Fu-Ad-Uddeen Ibrahim was then set through in the box on the right on 31 minutes, but stabbed his shot just over the bar.‬

‪Bury though took the lead a minute later, free-kick miestro Tommy Robinson with a set-piece on the left wing, which went right through the keeper's hands and into the far corner. The game then stepped up a notch or two, as Joe White was shown a straight red, for what looked like a 50/50 challenge on the half-way line on 36 minutes. ‬

‪Due to that dismissal, Aidan Browne dropped into centre back, and was instrumental in Bury keeping Barking at bay- who took advantage of the man advantage until the break. On 39 minutes, the visitors got through on goal, with Bugg on hand to palm the shot away. Again Barking had a shot at goal on 41 minutes, as the away side squared across goal from the left byline where Silva at the far post shot low and straight at George Bugg. The Barking man then attempted to kick the ball out the Bury keeper's hands before tapping into the net- with the goal ruled out for the foul. Two minutes later, Bugg was again called into action as the visitors' effort went straight to him. That was it for the first half, as Bury held firm to lead at the interval. ‬

Half Time: Bury Town Under-23s 1-0 Barking Under-23s

At the start of the sevond half, Bury were living dangerously but soon settled and enjoyed a lot of success down the right wing. On 46 minutes, Barking got through on the right themselves but was again denied by Bugg with Browne on hand to clear behind. Once more, Barking sent a low shot at goal on the right but hit it straight at Bugg at his near post on 47 minutes. A minute later another Barking low strike, this time from distance was once more easy for Bugg to dive down to his left to gather. 

Then after 59 minutes, Barking got through on the left side in the box as Bugg once more kept out the shot at his near post, leaving an open goal for the Barking man in the centre but somehow missed the open target- under pressure from Browne. Three minutes later, Bury doubled their lead, as Tommy Robinson's free-kick 25-yards from goal on the right was a fantastic outswinger into Emmanuel Machaya, leaving the striker an easy nod into the bottom right corner. That second goal fired Bury up for more goals, whilst Barking struggled to keep the Blues at bay.

The home side continued to search for a third and game sealing goal, as Call rounded the keeper on the left side in the box but ran out of space. However, the referee pulled play back for Bury free-kick thirty yards out. Tommy Robinson's free-kick was deflected by the wall but went just wide off the right post on 70 minutes. Three minutes later, a dubious offside call prevented Bury from getting through on goal- after Tanner Call set Emmanuel Machaya clear through on goal, who advanced into the box and was fouled by the sliding keeper. Bury then got a bit of luck on 76 minutes, as a scramble in the box on the right saw a closerange shot blocked by the boot of George Bugg. Barking then shot wildly off target from range on 80 minutes. 

Barking then swung a corner in on the left, with Parish at the far post heading towards the top right corner but was headed off the line on 81 minutes. Emmanuel Machaya then went on the counter, following a Barking corner, running from box to box down the left, on 85 minutes. His shot however, from the edge of the box towards the far corner was palmed behind by the keeper. Bury then went 3-0 up with three minutes to go, Tanner Call squaring across goal on the right byline, six-yards out saw substitute Fabien Joe react quickest to finish past the keeper to round off a fine evening's work for Bury. The Blues though continued to look for more goals, shooting low on the left- but straight at the keeper at his near post on 90+1 minutes. 

However, Barking did pull a goal back two minutes into stoppage time, as Bradley Allen in space in the left side in the box picked his spot to find the bottom left corner. 

On 90+6 minutes, Apperley fires over the top right corner, as Bury ran out 3-1 winners over their Barking counterparts.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 92: January 2019 (Game 106)

Game 106: Sunday 13 January 2019, 10:30am, Bury & Districts Premier Logos Sunday League Division One, Hardwick Heath Pitch 1, Moreton Hall Youth FC Ferals v Brandon Town Community

Ten men Moreton Hall Ferals came from a goal down to win 3-1 after three goals in last ten minutes, following Dove's one-on-one, Jake Peasgood's penalty and Aston Fallows' drop kick from his down area. A game that had it all began with Cameron Nicholls getting down the right on 2 minutes, who thwn cut into the box but saw his shot blocked. Back came Brandon though, who won a free-kick on the line of the box after 6 minutes, with the shot underneath the wall going straight to Fallows. Nicholls then had another go at goal on 12 minutes, the striker's free-kick on the left edge of the box went low and straight at the goalkeeper.

Down the other end, Brandon fired an effort at goal from range but struck well over the bar. The away side then went close again on 13 minutes, as a low cross in on the right across the face of goal was shot over the bar at the near post, followed by a great stop by Fallows to deny Brandon a minute later. The low shot on the right edge of the box was palmed behind well by the home stopper, getting down well at his near post to concede the corner. 

On the quarter of an hour mark, Ferals had a chance of their own to go infront- with Charlie Glover in space in the box whose low shot was comfortable and routine for the keeper. Nicholls then had another go at a free-kick close to the area, only this time the set piece was blocked by the wall on 16 minutes. The action continued to flow, as Brandon had a twenty-yard shot deflected through to Fallows on 20 minutes. 

Two minutes later, Brandon's No.6 had a go from a free-kick himself on the right from 20-yards, but shot just over the bar. Ferals then did well to get through to the left byline in the box on 26 minutes, as the ball squared dangerously across goal was cleared by a defender. The Ferals then hit a spell where they struggled to clear their lines, as Brandon hit a great strike just wide off the far post from the right edge of the box, on 32 minutes- before the home side survived an almighty scramble two minutes later. Firstly, a shot on the right side in the box was blocked well by Crowe, the visitors then smacked the right face off Fallows' crossbar, which was followed up by a third shot being blocked. From the resulting corner, however, Brandon sent a fierce low strike at goal from the edge of the box- only to be denied by Fallows. 

Continuing with that theme, Brandon had a shot blocked from 18-yards out, nine minutes before the interval, followed by heading a corner on the left over the bar at the far post on 37 minutes. The final chance of the half though, fell to the home side as Doneray's free-kick curled well over the wall but was tipped over the bar by the keeper on 39 minutes. At half-time, it was evident there would be goals in the second half, which proved to be the case and then some. 

HALF TIME: Moreton Hall Youth FC Ferals 0-0 Brandon Town Community

A fairly dramatic half, to say the very least, began with Nicholls firing a shot over the bar on 46 minutes. Three minutes later, Ferals had another go from the edge of the box- this time though the keeper got doen low to his right to collect. Brandon weren't fazed however, sending an effort on the right wide off the far post on 52 minutes. Ferals then denied once more from the edge of the box on 54 minutes, as Dove's shot was saved well by the diving keeper. 

Soon after, the hosts' shot on the right was again denied by the stopper, palming behind for a corner at his near post. Crowe's corner towards goal though was cleared behind for a corner at the near post. The drama then increased by a few notches on the hour mark, as Ferals could've had a penalty for a foul in the box- but instead were awarded a free-kick on the right wing. A fight then broke out in the box, as Nicholls was sent off (presumably for swearing at the ref on top of the fight), whilst the Brandon keeper saw yellow. Brandon though did try to take advantage of their extra man, as Farthing converted a penalty confidently on 69 minutes, finding the bottom left corner. 

The drama though had only just begun, as Ferals turned up the entertainment levels by a fair few levels, firstly a cross in from the left was shot over the bar on 71 minutes, before Bradley Peasgood went for goal on the edge of the box on 75 minutes. The home player's shot however, went over the bar. The hosts then won a corner on the right on 77 minutes, as Crowe's ball in was met by the head of Newdick at the back post- who headed over the bar. Now, here is where my mind was blown to pieces, as the ten men pulled level and went in front with two goals in a minute. Dove was set through on the left side in the box to slot just past the keeper and in off the far post, despite the efforts of the retreating defenders on 80 minutes. Inspired by the equaliser, Ferals made their late show an impressive one, as Doneray was bundled over in the box after 81 minutes. Jake Peasgood stepped up to finish superbly into the top right corner, to send the Ferals mad with joy once more. The best part was still to come though. 

Brandon's drastic efforts to equalise proved to be their down fall, before that though, the visitors' No.6 was denied by another Fallows save, from a shot on the edge of the box on 83 minutes. 

The rebound however, was put wide. Ferals on the other hand pushed for a third goal to complete an outstanding comeback, Stewart-Hogg seeing a shot blocked from the left edge of the box on 88 minutes. Brandon then went down the other end, as No.6'a shot from the left edge of the box was deflected behind well by Bradley Peasgood. Here's where the game peaked in terms of drama, as the game entered the 90th minute, Brandon sent everybody (including the keeper) up for a corner, in search of a late leveller. The keeper though airkicked his volley attempt, but did however lift the rebound back into the box. That though was headed straight at Fallows, who made a bee line to get a clear angle to superbly drop kick the ball from inside his box into the open Brandon net with barely any bounces. In reaction, the Ferals' stopper was the subject of absolutely balistic (but highly deserved) celebrations which goes to show you've think you've seen it all- but you really haven't. That goal concluded a match of which neither side will probably struggle to edplain what went on during those last ten minutes. Arguably for me, MOTM was by far Aston Fallows in the Ferals goal, who made some outstanding saves to keep his side in the game throughout, and showed great determination to make space to score his deserved goal.
