My Season Review 2018/19 Part 53: October 2018 (Game 62)

Game 62: Tues 30 October 2018, 7:45pm, Bostik North, Denny Bros Ram Meadow Stadium, Bury Town v Maldon & Tiptree.

Bury Town FC were defeated 4-1 by the Jammers, halting the hosts' recent run of good form at Denny Bros Ram Meadow Stadium.

In truth Maldon deserved it, with all five goals in the second half- after what was a fairly equal first 45 minutes, with Girdlestone's strike from the left edge of the box going over the top far corner after 5 minutes. Six minutes later, the Essex outfit skied over from the left edge of the box- with the two early effort sandwiched between Hughes looking to set Jolland through on the left in the Tiptree box, as McNamara came out to gather on 7 minutes.

Tiptree then went for goal on the right edge of the box, on 15 minutes, but saw the shot deflected wide off the near post, before the away side's low shot on the right in the area was hit straight at Tibbles a minute later. Maldon then had two shots blocked in the seventeenth minute, as the first was blocked from the left in the area with the ball falling to another Maldon player in the centre whose shot met the same fate.

My personal MOTM Ollie Hughes went close on 18 minutes, firing a great strike wide of the near post from the right side in the area. The Blues then won a free-kick on the right wing on 21 minutes. The ball in was met by the head of Clements in the centre as the centre-back headed wide off the right post.

Captain on the night Hughes found himself through to the left edge of the box on 32 minutes. The Bury forward though chose to tee up Chambers-Shaw on the centre edge of the Tiptree area, who shot low and wide of the left post. Four minutes later,  Hughes had a go himself as his low shot from the edge of the box went straight at the keeper.


Down the other end, a low Maldon ball in to the left in the area saw the visiting player firechis shot well over bar. Six minutes before the break, Chambers-Shaw was set through from the halfway line down the right to 18-yards from goal, as his great strike was hit straight at McNamara who had to beat the shot away.

Two minutes into first half stoppage time, Hughes went close again for Bury. The skipper's low 18-yard strike caught by the keeper diving to his left. Bury went close again on 45+4 minutes as Stafford's cross in on the left was met by the head of Kerins at the far post, but was caught by the diving keeper with the last touch of the half.

HALF TIME: Bury Town FC 0-0 Maldon & Tiptree FC

Two minutes after the interval, Chambers-Shaw's corner in on the left was met by Clements at the near post, whose flick towards the top far corner went over the bar.

Tiptree then had a flurry of shots denied on 49 minutes. The first a header from a corner on the left, but the header in the middle was saved by the diving Tibbles low to his left. The rebound shot was cleared off the line, before Tibbles palmed away the follow up at his near post as Bury headed over their own bar to briefly halt the danger. On 52 minutes, a Tiptree man was fed in the centre of the Blues box- but shot off target.

Despite that miss, the Jammers opened the scoring a minute later wiyh Briggs' low shot on the left in the Bury box finding the middle of the Blues net. Tiptree then had a curked strike towards the nesr post, from the right edge of the box, blocked after 57 minutes- followed soon after by a cut back on the left in the Bury area as the shot on the far side was deflected, before being headed away from the far corner.

Hughes the countered down the right wing and into the box, as his thunderous effort was tipped well onto the bar by the keeper. The rebound fell on the left in the box where the shot was deflected behind the near post for a corner.

On the hour mark, Hughes got through to the right side in the box but saw his low shot at the near post palmed away well by McNamara. Horne then tried his luck five minutes later from the right edge of the box, as his well hit strike was palmed away by the keeper down at his near post. On 66 minutes, substitute Tommy Robinson's fantastic cross in on the right was met by the head of Hughes from 6-yards out but saw his effort blocked by both the defender and keeper who were close by. Two minutes later, Tiptree won a corner on the right, as the header from the middle towards the far post was cleared off the line.

Bury then countered once more, as Hughes' cross in from the right was handled at the back post with the referee waving away the penalty appeals. The Blues though levelled on 69 minutes, Hughes picked up possession 18-yards out firing a great strike into the middle off the net, via the underside of the crossbar!

Unfortunately for Bury, they were only level for 5 minutes as Sheriff restored the visitors lead from close range. His low shot from the left inside the area going into the right-side off the net. Tiptree then cut the ball back into the box on the left on 76 minutes, as the ball across fell to a Maldon man at the far post. His ball back across to the left post saw a visiting man go for an acrobatic shot, who just couldn't time it right, hitting the ball in the opposite direction.

Luckily for him though, McLeod ensured that it wouldn't matter doubling the Jammers' lead with 11 minutes left to play. Capitalising on being gifted too much space in the Bury half, McLeod hit a fantastic strike into the top near corner from the left edge of the box, leaving a helpless Tibbles rooted. Despite the increased deficit, Bury continued to hunt a second goal for them on 84 minutes.

Machaya turning on the leftvedge of the box, shooting low but straight at McNamara- with the flag up anyway for offside. The Bury forward then flicked the ball through to Hughes, three minutes later, as the skipper was running down the left wing and into the box. However, the goalscorer's fierce low effort went wide of the far post. Chambers-Shaw then had a go himself, on the edge of the area on 88 minutes, only to see his shot blocked.

Tiptree then sealed the three points on 89 minutes, as a ball into the left side in the area was mis-judged by Tibbles, leaving Sheriff the easy tak of netting into the empty bottom far corner to pick up a brace.

My 2018/19 Season Review: Part 52 October 2018 (Games 60-61)

Games 60-61: Sun 28 October 2018, 10:30am, Premier Logos Bury & Districts Sunday FL, Division One Morten Hall Youth FC Ferals v Horringer Socials Club Hardwick Heath Pitch 1. Pitch 3: Div 4, Rougham FC v Breda FC.

Horringer Socials Club defeated Morten Hall Youth FC Ferals 5-0 to go top, whilst Breda maintained their 100% winning start to the season in Division 4. 

For reference the Ferals match kicked off 2 minutes before Rougham's, with the first chance falling to Horringer on Pitch 1 after two minutes. No.14's shot on the right in the area, from close range was saved by Stobbart at his near post- with Newdick heading off the line. Seconds later, Socials' Clark fired low and wide of the left post. 

Clark then tested Stobbart after 6 minutes, as his low strike from the edge of the box was comfortably gathered by the home stopper diving down. Then on 7 minutes, Socials' No.19's shot on the edge of the box was deflected wide off the left post for a corner- as the away side searched for an early goal. Before that though Breda had a shot deflected wide off the right post out for a corner, on 6 minutes- over on Pitch 3. The ball in though was volleyed well over the bar. 

Back on Pitch 1, Clark gave Horringer the lead ten minutes in as the Socials class talent fired a great strike into the roof of the net, from the left edge of the box. Two minutes later, Horringer's cut back on the left byline in the area found No.19 running onto it on the edge of the box, as he dribbled his way to a shooting position. However, his low shot went wide of the far post. 

Over on Pitch 3, Breda dispossed Rougham on the left wing on 11 minutes. The visiting man then cut into the box as his shot at the near post was palmed away by a strong outstretched hand by the Rougham keeper as No.3 cleared the rebound over his own bar. 

Over to Pitch 1, Ferals then had their first shot, as the hosts' low shot on 13 minutes was straight at the stopper. A minute later, Horringer won a free-kick on the right, as the ball in was headed stright at Maxwell at his back post. 

Ferals then went close on 17 minutes, as Frost-Palmer's curled free-kick on the left edge of the box was deflected over the top far corner by the wall. Pitch 3 then saw a shock on the cards, as Rougham took the lead on 16 minutes. A corner in on the right was headed into the top left corner at the far post. 

Back again to Pitch 1, as Horringer shot wide of the near post, from the left-hand side in the box after 18 minutes. Briefly switching over to Pitch 3, where Rougham's No.11 had a shot blocked, before Horringer had a shot blocked of their own on the edge of the area back on Pitch 1, after 22 minutes. 

After 24 minutes Horringer dribbled through defenders onto the left inside the box, as their low shot went wide of the near post, before more drama followed on pitch 3. Twenty-three minutes into that game Rougham hit the crossbar as they threatened to go 2-0 up, before volleying well over the bar from inside the area a minute later. Back to Pitch 1 where Horringer had a corner on the right after 27 minutes. However, the ball in at the far post was palmed away by Stobbart directly at the post. 

Ferals then won a free-kick on 29 minutes, as Frost-Palmer's effort on the edge of the box was curled well over the top far corner. Over on Pitch 3, Breda won a penalty on 28 minutes as a Rougham man brought down a visiting man on the right in the area before sliding the ball off the line. The spotkick was then slotted into the bottom far corner, just past the keeper to make it 1-1. Breda then had a shot kept out- believably by the post on 33 minutes, before Rougham fired wide off the near post on the right

Breda then curled a short free-kick over the top right corner on 35 minutes, before Breda's ball in on the right, a minute later, saw the visiting man in the box chip the onrushing keeper, but wide of the far post- as the away side missed a great chance to go ahead. After 37 minutes, Rougham had a great chance to retake the lead, as their well hit strike was palmed away well by the Breda keeper. 

Back on Pitch 1, Glover had a shot deflected, six minutes before the break. The deflected shot went up in the air, before coming down to hit the right post- as the ball went behind for a corner. Jake Peasgood then tried his luck with a low shot on the right side in the box, as he hit wide whilst running through on goal after 43 minutes. Horringer though had a free-kick on the right edge of the area, just sixty seconds later. However, the ball into the back post was put behind by a Ferals man just behind the post. 

That was the last action of the opening half, with the scores 0-1 to Horringer & 1-1 on Pitch 3.

HT: Morten Hall Youth FC Ferals 0-1 Horringer Socials Club & Rougham FC 1-1 Breda FC

A minute after the restart Ferals' ball into the box was hit straight at the keeper at his near post, as the hosts began to get back into the match. The visitors though kept the pressure on Stobbart's goal after 48 minutes, Horringer's low shot in the area was deflected as the Ferals stopper gathered at his right post. Two minutes later, Horringer's No.6 shot on the edge of the area was deflected straight at Stobbart. 

Seconds later Horringer's No.18 then handled the ball in the Ferals half, as the hosts No.14 shot low but straight at Stobbart with the free-kick awarded anyway. The Socials then doubled their advantage on 52 minutes, as Horringer's corner in on the right was sent towards goal. Although Ferals cleared off the line, the ball fell at the far post where it rebounded of a Horringer man at the back post, which was originally cleared off the line before eventually going in- despite the efforts of Stobbart gathering the ball. Over to Pitch 3, Breda headed a corner in on the left wide of the far post after 53 minutes. 

Back to Pitch 1, where Frost-Palmer had two free-kicks in the space of a minute. The first on 57 minutes was curled well over the bar from the edge of the area, with his second a minute later- on the right from range- headed just over at the far post by the Ferals skipper Larter. After 61 minutes, the ball fell to Crowe in the area after Larter was fouled in the area- as the former hit the left post as Maxwell gathered just on the line. Breda then took the lead on the hour mark, before slotting a teammate through on the left seconds later- but shot straight at the keeper. 

After 64 minutes on Pitch 1, Horringer's No.18 went for goal from close range in the area, Stobbart though blocked the shot before the ball fell to No.18 whose shot, on the left in the area, went just wide of the bottom far corner. 

Breda then curled a free-kick wide of the top far corner on 63 minutes on Pitch 3, before Horringer went close again on 66 minutes back on Pitch 1. The visitors ball in on the right found No.18 at the far post as the shot was deflected low behind the near post. Socials then made it 0-3 after 68 minutes, No.14's low shot on the right slotting into the bottom left corner. 

Soon after, Rougham levelled on Pitch 3 after 66 minutes. The free-kick into the box was saved by the keeper, before bring fired into the right corner for 2-2. After Sixty-nine minutes had been played on pitch 1, Dixon went close for Ferals. 

As the No.12's great strike from the edge of the box was tipped over the top left corner by Maxwell, the corner in though was headed wide off the far post, by Crowe in the middle. Pitch 3 then saw a Breda ball in on the left headed at the far post on 68 minutes. The keeper palmed it out as the rebound was shot wide of the right post. 

Back on Pitch 1, Socials won a free-kick on the edge of the area but curled it straight at Stobbart at his right post on 73 minutes. A minute later, Horringer's No.4 crossed the ball in on the left where it found No.14 at the far post, but headed it just over the top right corner. With 15 minutes left, Horringer's No.18 went for goal but had his shot blocked by his own man outside the area. Over to Pitch 3, where Breda's ball in on the right saw the forward have two shots blocked at the far post on 74 minutes. Ferals then countered over on Pitch 1 after 78 minutes, as Peck's shot on the right was straight at the keeper at his near post. Pitch 3 then saw Rougham free-kick into the box on the right put wide of the far post, after 77 minutes. 

Ten minutes then remained on Pitch 1 when Horringer's ball in on the left was met by Clark at the far post, where his shot from point blank range was stabbed at goal, as the keeper touched behind for a corner. The corner in though missed everyone in the six yard box. Ferals then countered down right, but put the effort wide. On 82 minutes, Horringer's No.14 made it 0-4, with a low finish into the bottom near corner- just past the keeper from 18-yards on the right. 

Breda then shot wide of the left post on 81 minutes, before Horringer went 0-5 up on Pitch 1 after 83 minutes- slotting into the left corner. Clark then had an 18-yard sidefooted shot go over the bar, with five minutes left. Breda though sealed their win on 84 minutes, making it 2-3 on Pitch 3. 

Four minutes remained on Pitch 1 as Horringer's No.18 went for goal on the left in the area, but saw his strike deflected over the top far corner. A minute later, a ball into the box by Socials was headed over in the centre, followed by Horringer's shot on the edge of the box going wide off the far post on 88 minutes. 

Peck then headed a Ferals ball in on the left straight at Maxwell at the near post, on 89 minutes, before Horringer fired over the bar from the edge of the box a minute later.

So with that game finished, focus switched to Pitch 3, as Breda's shot on the right was fired over the bar on 89 minutes, before the hosts No.10 was booked on 90+1 minutes.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 51: October 2018 (Games 58-59)

Games 58-59: 2:30pm, Sat 27 October 2018, Victory Ground BSE, Suffolk FA Junior Cup R2 Sporting 87 v Cockfield United, Touchline Suffolk Ipswich League League A Sporting 87 Reserves v Mendlesham Reserves:

Sporting 87 first team beat Cockfield United on penalties whilst their Reserves drew with Mendlesham's Reserves also at home on a cold afternoon in Bury St Edmunds.

The hosts' reserves had the first chance on 2 minutes, as a low ball in on the right was passed to the far post where the effort was cleared away from goal. The first team then had a shot a minute later, as No.9's shot inside the area was deflected over the bar for a corner on the left. The corner in on 4 minutes was not cleared in the middle as Sporting's No.7 saw his headed kept out from close range.

Cockfield then put a low ball in on the left as Mayhew gathered down to his left at his near post ahead of a visiting player running in after 6 minutes. The two games kicked off a minute apart, hence minute differences, with the Sporting Reserves firing a low effort straight at the keeper on 5 minutes. Back onto Pitch 1, Cockfield took a deserved lead on 8 minutes (0-1) as their No.11 was fed through to the right edge of the box as the visiting winger slotted home into the bottom far corner. On 11 minutes Sporting Reserves' ball upfield went through to the Mendlesham keeper at his left post- however the stopper's attempt to trap the ball almost backfired as the ball rolled underneath his foot before recovering not too far away from his goalline. Back to Pitch 1, as the visitors went close to doubling their lead after 15 minutes.

Cockfield's No.7 firing over the bar from the edge of the box, as the away side hit the post moments later. Three minutes later, a Sporting cross in on the right was headed towards goal at the near post but was smacked well over the bar by a defender running back to cover. After 18 minutes also on Pitch 2, Mendlesham Reserves went 0-1 up. The away side dispatching a well taken penalty into the bottom left corner- the first of many we would see today.

Returning to Pitch 1, Cockfield won a corner on the right, which fell to No.4 in the box whose low effort was deflected wide off the far post on 22 minutes. The hosts Reserves then had a free-kick on the right edge of the area on 21 minutes but struck the kick not too much over the top far corner. Sporting's low ball in on the right on 27 minutes was then gathered well by the away keeper just ahead of Sporting's No.10. After 27 minutes on Pitch 2, Sporting Reserves low ball in on the right was put just behind the near post. Pitch 1 then saw Sporting shoot low and wide of the right post on 29 minutes.

Over again to Pitch 2, nine minutes before the interval, Mendlesham Reserves had a free-kick on the right, as No.7's shot in the area was blocked- with the rebound skied over. Sporting's Reserves then had a shot on the right, six-yards from goal volleyed well over the bar, on 39 minutes as the home sides both hunted equalising goals.

Four minutes before half-time, Sporting Reserves' ball into the box was chested out to a teammate, whose decent effort was deflected over the bar for a corner. The following ball in a minute later was headed off target at the near post.

Meanwhile on Pitch 1 the whistle went to indicate the break, leaving just a minute left of the Reserve match, as Sporting had a free-kick on the edge of the box kicked straight at the keeper at his far, left, post.

HALF-TIME: Sporting 87 0-1 Cockfield United & Sporting 87 Reserves 0-1 Mendlesham Reserves

The second half saw both games kick off just a few seconds apart- handy for myself making the timings easier. The first notable action of the second half, on 48 minutes saw a low Cockfield ball in across the six yard box cleared backwards by a home defender, forcing Maybew to prevent the corner toe-poking out for a throw in. The away side then had a corner on the right on 50 minutes.

However, the Cocks headed wide at the near post. The first action then came of the half over on Pitch 2 on 51 minutes, as Sporting Reserves free-kick in on the right was headed at the near post straight at the Mendlesham keeper at the far post. Seconds later, the First Team on Pitch 1 won a corner on the left, as No.9's header went just away from the far corner.

Back on Pitch 2, Mendlesham then had an effort of their own on 52 minutes, but hit it straight at the keeper at his left post. Two minutes later Sporting 87 Reserves equalised putting the ball into the Mendlesham net. Ten minutes into the second half, on Pitch 1 Cox had a shot blocked in the box as the visitors were unable to add to their goal tally.

After 57 minutes, Sporting's first team had a free-kick on the left edge of the box, as No.7's shot was blocked by the wall before skying the rebound over the bar, before Cockfield had a well struck shot on the edge of the box go straight to the keeper, a minute later. Sporting though pulled level after 59 minutes, a low header into the bottom left corner from close range made it 1-1. With 26 minutes left, Sporting Reserves then made their way to the edge of the box, but shot low and straight at the keeper.

Then on 70 minutes, the Sporting first team had a corner on the left. However, the hosts put the ball in wide of the far post. Sporting then had a shot on the right deflected over the bar two minutes later, as the home side seemed to spark into life in the second half. The home sides Reserves then went close to taking the lead against their Mendlesham counterparts on 75 minutes.

The first shot, on the right in the box was blocked as the keeper smothered the rebound from close range. Now, I don't know what happened or when but I found out Sporting Reserves had a man sent off- which to be fair I did see quite a few injuries whilst flicking between the games. On 77 minutes, Mendlesham had a corner in on the right headed wide by No.14 at the far post as the hosts looked to take advantage (think they may have had a red card of their own later on though.

Back onto Pitch 1, as Cockfield had a corner on the right with the eventual shot at goal at the near post being cleared off the line at the far post, before the rebound was fired well over the bar on 78 minutes. The away side then had a shot blocked from outside the area on 84 minutes, followed by Sporting having a shot well saved by the keeper on 88 minutes.

There was late drama over on Pitch 2, as Mendlesham Reserves corner in from the left was bundled over the line at the back post, from close range to make it 1-2 to the visitors a minute into added time. It could've been the same over on Pitch 1, as Cockfield's free-kick on the left was curled over the bar and onto the top of the net on 90+2 minutes. Sporting's No.10 then had a shot blocked on the right edge of the area a minute later, as the referee soon blew his whistle to indicate full-time and penalties.

FULL TIME (90mins): Sporting 87 1-1 Cockfield United.

Carrying on with the action on Pitch 2, Sporting's free-kick in their own half on the right was whipped into the box by the keeper, as the header at the far post was straight at the keeper- five minutes into added time. Mendlesham then conceded a penalty a minute later, sliding in dangerously from behind.

Sporting Reserves took advantage, as No.10's penalty was slotted well into the bottom left corner to level the scores after 7 minutes of stoppage time, despite the keeper not being too far away from the ball. That was that as the two sides shared a point, just before the penalty drama began on Pitch 1.

FULL TIME: Sporting 87 Reserves 2-2 Mendlesham Reserves.

Onto the penalty shootout, between Sporting 87 & Cockfield United then.

Up first was Sporting's No.2, who dispatched into the bottom left corner, as the keeper dived the wrong way (1-0 Sporting). Taking first for Cockfield was captain No.6, who picked out the bottom left corner despite the keeper close to getting a hand to it to make it 1-1 after 1 penalty each.

Sporting's No.14 then stepped up, with a duplicate of Cockfield No.6's spotkick to make it 2-1. Cockfield's No.2 then made the walk up, as his kick was saved at waist height well by the substitute Sporting keeper up to his left. Sporting though, failed to take advantage as their low spotkick was saved by the keeper down to his left.

Cockfield's No.9 then stepped up as he sent the keeper the wrong way, slotting into the bottom right corner to level it up at 2-2. The Sporting No.7 though couldn't maintain their lead, as he put wide of the bottom left corner. Luckily for him though, Cockfield's No.11 hit the right post, which then hit the opposite post and still stayed out.

Sporting's No.12 though made it 3-2 fantastically finding the top left corner with the keeper diving the wrong way. Cockfield's No.10 levelled it at 3-3 slotting into the bottom right corner, sending the keeper the wrong way. Sporting's captain No.11 then made it 4-3 in the exact same way as the Cockfield penalty just before his.

Cockfield's No.14 then made it 4-4, slotting into the bottom left corner, with Sporting's No.10 slotting into the same corner for 5-4.

Cockfield's No.7 then dispatched into the bottom left corner, sending the keeper the wrong way for 5-5, as Sporting's No.6 made it 6-5 with a pee-roller just finding the bottom right corner- helped by the keeper diving the other way.

Cockfield's No.5 then hit the left post and in to level at 6-6, with Sporting's No.8 finding the bottom right corner- which proved to be the winner. The Cockfield No.3 had his waist high penalty palmed away by the keeper to his right as the hosts prevailed 7-6 on penalties.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 50: October 2018 (Game 57)

Game 57: The Abbey Stadium, Academy Stadium Game, 6pm, Wed 24 Oct 2018, Cambridge United Under-15s v Manchester United Under-15s

Manchester United Under-15s lost 2-1 to Cambridge United Under-15 in an entertaining game at The Abbey Stadium. 

Both sides gave good account of themselves infront of a crowd of 812, with chances falling both sides way during the night. On 5 minutes, a Man United throughball to No.10 down the middle forced the keeper to clear, as his clearance deflected off the forward going wide of the right post. 

The hosts then had the first proper shot of the game on 7 minutes, as No.3 brought the ball upfield well, before squaring to No.10 on the edge of the box- as the low shot was straight at the visiting keeper at the right post. The Red Devils' ball over the top to No.9, a minute later, saw the away striker fouled on the left edge of the area as United sent the ball in low as the first timed shot at the near post went over the bar after 9 minutes. 

Cambridge's No.9 was a thorn in the Man United defence all evening, as he beat the away defence but shot over from the edge of the area on 10 minutes. 

The home side went close again on 11 minutes, as No.7's powerful strike from the right edge of the box went just over the top near corner. Then on 16 minutes, the hosts' No.4 tried his luck with a low 20-yard strike but hit it straight at the keeper. Manchester United then won a corner on the left, which was taken short before being crossed to the edge of the box, where the ball was chested before being shot well over the top near corner, after 17 minutes. Four minutes later, Cambridge had a shot blocked on the edge of the area before having a big penalty shout waved away on 28 minutes. 

A young Cambridge player was shoved to the ground on the left in the Reds' (wearing the Pink Away kit) box. On the half-an-hour mark, Man United had a shot blocked on the edge of the penalty area before firing the rebound over the bar as neither side could find a breakthrough, just yet. Before that came though, Cambridge's low shot on the right edge of the area towards the far post forced the keeper into a good save, palming away diving down to his right after 31 minutes. The hosts then took the lead after 34 minutes, the Cambridge No.9 swerving past the Red Devils defenders on the left in the box, before stabbing the ball into the net and just past the keeper from close range. 

However, with the last kick of the half (40 mins) United equalised, as No.9 was fed through into the box as the young striker thumped the ball into the roof of the net. 

HT Cambridge United Under-15s 1-1 Manchester United Under-15s

HT thoughts: Good half, right result to be honest. C11 fantastic, MU2, MU5 MU8 MU9 impressive. MU5 brought the ball forward well from cb, and looked confident. C11 has given MU's 2 the run around. MU9 has made good runs and had a lot of ball. Very good game. 

Onto the second half, which I thought was also fairly even but probably just shaded by the hosts, with Cambridge starting the half in control of possession for the opening minutes. Two minutes after the break, Cambridge's No.11 on the left byline fired just over but not sure if it was meant or not. That though was followed seconds later by the impressive Cambridge No.9 firing low and into the sidenetting on the right. Then on 48 minutes, the hosts' No.6 curled a good strike at goal from the edge of the box but the United keeper was up to the task reaching up to catch the ball on 48 minutes. Cambridge's No.11 then found himself on the left in the box but sidefooted his shot just wide off the far post on 49 minutes. Although the Red Devils passed the ball around nicely in the first ten minutes of the half, there wasn't much to shout about from the away side of proceedings, as Cambridge had another effort kept out on 55 minutes. A minute later, the hosts' No.9 then fired just over the bar from outside the box, before Cambridge's No.10 fired low and wide of the left post from the edge of the area on 59 minutes. 

After 61 minutes, the Red Devills No.9 was picked out down the left who then ran down the wing. The United youngster then cut inside to set up No.4 on the right edge of the box whose low shot was straight at the U's keeper at the near post. Almost a carbon copy a minute later, as MUFC's No.9 repeated the buildup but this time went for goal himself, as his low shot on the left in the area was easy for the keeper diving down at his near post. Down the other end, Cambridge retook the lead on 63 minutes.

No.9 on the edge of the box teed up No.6 inside the area on the right, to thump the ball into the top far corner past the rooted keeper, for what was a great goal. The home side went close to a third goal on 70 minutes, No.2's ball in on the right bylinevwas palmed away by the Red Devils' keeper as the effort at goal was smothered before the keeper pounced on the loose ball. The hosts went close again on 72 minutes, as a low ball in across the face of goal ended up being cleared off the line at the far post. 

On 73 minutes the hosts' No.17 dribbled the ball upfield well, before slotting in No.9 through in the area whose shot towards the left post was palmed behind well by the diving Man United keeper, as the hosts looked like grabbing a third goal. Cambridge's No.9 then had two shots at goal on 76 & 78 minutes, with the first on the left edge of the box but well over the top far corner. The second though, from the right inside the box, was low and not far wide off the left post. The hosts then had the final notable action of the game on 80 minutes, as a Cambridge cutback on the right byline just about curled away from goal, as the shot at the far post towards the left post was headed off the line as the second effort was put behind the goal.

Young Marketmen Progress in Cup thanks to goals from Free-kicks

Worendl at the double, with McCrory grabbing the other as Needham came from 0-1 to win by two clear goals

Needham Market Reserves progressed to the next round of the Thurlow Nunn League Challenge Cup after knocking out First Division South side Burnham Ramblers 3-1.

The visitors though put up a good fight, taking the game to the Young Marketmen who were denied by serveral good saves by French in the Ramblers' goal. However, it was Burnham who had the first chance early on, coming a minute in as a free-kick, from distance on the right, was headed wide at the near post. Then on 2 minutes, French's pass out was pounced on by a Needham man- after just evading it's target- on the right edge of the box whose low shot went just wide off the far post. 

Needham then went close again on 5 minutes. McCrory was set through down the middle before his low shot towards the left post was palmed away by French diving down after advancing well off his line, who then gathered the rebound. Then on 7 minutes Carvell was teed up on the right inside the area, whose low shot towards the far corner was saved well by the foot of French. Two minutes later, a Burnham defender slipped down the visitors' left  wing outside his own box, as Carvell picked up the loose ball before finding a teammate on the right inside the box who then picked out another Needham man. The ball then rebounded of the foot of the home player before going straight to French at the near post. 

On 13 minutes the Young Marketmen went close again, as a cross-come-shot on the left went just over the top far corner, before Clayton-Leek's strike on the edge of the box was blocked by Salmon with 15 minutes played. Carvell then had another shot at goal on 19 minutes, as this time his low effort from the edge of the box went straight at French. Then on 26 minutes, Burnham won a free-kick from range, which was deflected over the bar for a corner on the right. A minute later, the ball into the back post was volleyed way over the top right corner as the scores remained level. Despite the visitors being caught offside on 29 minutes, their low shot towards the left post forced Cook into a strong save at the near post, as both keepers kept the score down on multiple occassions throughout the game. 

After half-an-hour, a Burnham well hit shot swerved it's way to the left post but was tracked well by Cook who caught it with ease. The Ramblers then won a free-kick on the right wing on 32 minutes, as the ball in was punched away by Cook ahead of a visiting player jumping at the near post, closely followed by the away side having a shot blocked from outside the box a minute later. A tremendous save from Cook then prevented a stunning goal by Burnham, which was even appauled by French in the Burnham goal, on 34 minutes. 

A well struck Burnham strike on the right was dipping down towards the top far corner as the home stopper dived up brilliantly to tip the ball over the bar. Ten minutes before the break, a Burnham shot on the right in the box forced Cook into a routine save as the ball went straight at the keeper. With 8 minutes before the interval, Page was then teed up on the right in the area who found his way into the centre before his low shot at the near post was kicked behind by the diving French. From the corner, the home side saw a shot blocked as the rebound was fired over the bar for a goalkick. 

On 39 minutes, Burnham tried their luck from close range on the right, but were denied once more by a great reflex save by Cook as he palmed the shot away. However, his resistence was broken a minute later, as the visitors cross in from the right was headed into the top right corner well by Burnham skipper Salmon. The home side responded on 43 minutes, having two shots blocked. First of all on the left edge of the box, before suffering the same fate on the right in the area. 

Webb then went for goal on the left edge of the box, a minute before half-time, but saw his shot bounce up kindly for Cook at catch at his far post as the first half ended with Burnham infront. 

HALF-TIME: Needham Market Reserves 0-1 Burnham Ramblers FC

The second half start with Burnham firing a shot on the right over the bar on 47 minutes. The visitors then picked up the first of their yellow cards on 56 minutes, after a foul on the left edge of the visitors' penalty area. 

After a minute delay due to the booking, the free-kick was swung into to the far post as a Burnham defender headed the ball up in the air. French though palmed it away, as the referee gave a free-kick for a foul in the box. Then on 58 minutes Clayton-Leek was fed in space on the left in the box, but saw his shot at goal blocked by a Burnham defender sliding across well. 

Tom Howard then picked up booking for sliding in from behind on the right edge of his own box on the hour mark, as it proved costly for Burnham with Needham equalising from the resulting ball in, as the outswinger into the box was headed in at the far post by Worendl from a yard out. Four minutes later, Burnham won a free-kick on the right wing, but headed it just over the bar at the far post as Needham were awarded a free-kick anyway. After 65 minutes, the visitors won a corner on the left, as the ball in at the far post was sent towards goal where a Burnham man attempting to flick the ball on indirectly headed the effort away. 

McCrory then had a shot blocked on the right in the box on 66 minutes, before the Young Marketmen took the lead three minutes later. A freekick in on the right wing close to the box was sent in low as Worendl picked up a brace, guiding the ball into the bottom left corner from the middle of the area. Cook then denied a low Burnham shot on the right diving down with his feet at his near post, before the rebound was fired over on 70 minutes. After Mernick's foul twenty yards out from his own goal out on the left, Needham fired the kick low but straight at French on 74 minutes.

Then as the game entered it's final fifteen minutes a Needham corner on the left was taken short, as the shot on the edge of the box was hit verociously just over the bar, before Burnham had a shot blocked on the right edge of the box- as Cook saved the rebound down low for a corner on 78 minutes. The visitors then had a free-kick on the left edge of the box blocked by the wall on 83 minutes, before a Needham ball down the left forced French to clear as the ball fell to a Needham man in the middle, whose long range effort was blocked three minutes later. 

Seconds later, Clayton-Leek went for goal on the left in the area, but was saved well by French diving at his near post, as the rebound just evaded a Needham man running in, down the middle. Then with 2 minutes remaining, a Burnham effort at goal, from ball in on the right, was partially cleared away before Cook saved down to his right. A minute later though, Burnham then shot low on the edge of the area towards the bottom right corner, but saw the effort cleared away. Jack Davies then picked up a booking a minute into stoppage time- again sliding in from behind as Moleyneaux was through outside the area.

The resulting kick was shot at goal, as French did well to beat out the effort at his right post as the rebound fell kindly for McCrory to fire it into the same corner for 3-1 to Needham's Reserves. That's how it finished as the Reds picked up a fantastic cup win.

‪DEVELOPMENT BLUES MAINTAIN HOME UNBEATEN RECORD‬

‪Bury Town Under-23s 3-2 Witham Town Under-23s‬

‪Bury Town Under-23s came from 1-2 down to beat their Essex opponents 3-2 thanks to another hatrick from Emmanuel Machaya. ‬

‪Tommy Robinson almost opened the scoring on 7 minutes, as the Bury midfielder was fouled outside the Witham box with his free-kick curling brilliantly around the wall and towards the top near corner, but was palmed behind the post by the keeper. Witham then won a free-kick on the left inside our half, but took it quickly putting it low and wide of the near post, with 10 minutes played. Then on 12 minutes Bury went close again, as a low cross in from the left was held up well in the middle before being teed up for Addison to strike just wide of the top right corner. ‬

‪Witham then won a corner on the right after 15 minutes, which was swung in and had to be cleared off the line at the near post, with the visitors handling the rebound. Two minutes later, Bury were awarded a penalty as Robinson's ball in on the left byline in the box was handled by a Witham player as a Bury man tried an overhead kick. A minute passed before Machaya stepped up but saw his penalty towards the bottom right corner beaten away by the visiting stopper. The home side then hit an effort straight at the keeper, at his near post on the right on 19 minutes. After 22 minutes, Machaya set Joe through on the left in the box forcing the keeper to come off his line as the midfielder's shot goes underneath the keeper and wide of the near post. ‬

‪Witham then shot wide of the far post, sliding in on the right in the box on 26 minutes, as the first half was fairly equal and ultimately came down to who took their chances. With 14 minutes before the interval, Crichton's curled strike, on the left from 25-yards out, went just wide of the top far corner as the hosts pressed for the opening goal. Two minutes later, Bury then won a free-kick on the left, which was flicked wide off the far post post by the head of Brown. ‬

‪Witham then tried their luck with a 30-yard strike on the left on 34 minutes, but fired just wide off the near post. Bury then took the lead on 38 minutes as Machaya was fed in space on the left in the area before tapping home into the bottom near corner from close range. The Blues then won a corner on the right fives minutes before the break, which the home side headed towards goal only for Witham to clear witn Bury putting the rebound off target. The last shot of the half fell to Witham on 41 minutes, as the effort on the right edge of the box was blocked by Porter. ‬

HALF TIME: Bury Town Under-23s 1-0 Witham Town Under-23s

Three minutes after the break the Blues went close to a second, as ‪Robinson then did well down the right inside the box, as his chipped pass to Machaya at the far post is cleared as far as Brown, who was standing just inside the box, but fired just wide of the top right corner. Crichton then went for goal on the left, ten minutes into the half, but saw his strike deflected into the area as Witham cleared behind for a corner. ‬

‪Witham though levelled proceedings on 55 minutes, Bailey Last was set through one-on-one with Bugg in the box as he had the simple task of rounding the Bury keeper with ease before slotting into the empty net. Witham then shot just wide of the far post with a low shot on the right on 56 minutes, brfore the visitors took the lead with Sutherland set through on the left side in the Bury area whose low shot found its way into the bottom right corner, despite Bugg getting a hand to it. ‬

‪The visitors then had a free-kick from long range on the left, after 62 minutes, which was put wide by the visitors at the far post, before the Essex outfit's shot on the edge of the box was blocked on 65 minutes. Bury pulled level on 67 minutes, as a great ball from Joshua Revell over the top set Machaya through who lifted the ball over the retreating defender, before cooly slotting into the bottom right corner to pick up a brace. Witham then had a shot on the left inside the Blues box blocked well by Bugg, as the Bury stopper stood his ground well having advanced off his goalline on 69 minutes. The resulting corner though, was hit just over the bar a minute later. ‬

‪Bury substitute Charlie Cook then tried his luck from 25-yards out on the left, but struck narrowly wide of the near post on 72 minutes. Six minutes later, Witham's shot on the right forced Bugg into a routine stop, simply catching the effort at his near post. Then with ten minutes remaining, the ball fell to Cook in the Witham box as the winger saw his shot blocked. ‬

‪The home side then won the game on 82 minutes, as Emmanuel Machaya got himself yet another hatrick. The striker was set through down the right whose shot in the box was saved by the keeper, well off his line, leaving the Bury goalscorer the easy task of calmly dispatching the rebound low and into the near corner, past two defenders running back to the goalline. With four minutes left, Witham went close as the visitors hit the woodwork with the ball going luckily the right side of the frame of the goal from the Bury propestive. Again, Machaya was set through down the right on 88 minutes but this time saw his low strike kept out by the keeper once more off his line. Soon after, the referee whistled for full-time, as Bury stretched their unbeaten home record to five games.‬

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 46: October 2018 (Game 53)

Game 53: Ipswich & Suffolk Girls and Women's FL Womens Division, 2pm, Needham Market Women v East Bergholt Ladies, Bloomfields 3G, Sun 21 October 2018

Needham Market Women lost their 100% start after forming in the summer narrowly to last season's League Champions infront of 75 at Bloomfields.

The Reds went close as early as the second minute, as the low shot on the edge of the box came back into play off the left post. Fair to say the game was closely fought throughout, as Griffin-Jenkins' fith minute shot on the right side in the area was deflected behind the near post.

East Bergholt then went close on 7 minutes, as a free-kick on the left just inside the Needham half went over via the crossbar. Needham though took the lead on 18 minutes, as the ball fell to Francesca Rainbird on the left in box who rounded the visiting keeper to slot into near corner for 1-0 to Needham Market.

The Marketwomen then went for goal on the edge of the box, as the shot went wide off the right post after a deflection off a Needham player in the box on 25 minutes, soon followed by East Bergholt putting wide three minutes later.

The shot from the edge of the home box going wide of the left post, despite the offside flag. On 33 minutes Griffin-Jenkins had a shot blocked on the edge of the box as the ball fell to the visitors' Romer-Lee who could only skrew wide of the bottom left corner.

The visitors maintained their maintained their strong end to the first half, as the defending Champions' shot from the left edge of the box was straight at stand-in goalkeeper Green in the home goal, with three minutes before half-time. On the verge of the interval, Griffin-Jenkins then scuffed her shot wide of the near post from the left edge of the box, as Needham went into the break a goal ahead.

HALF TIME: Needham Market Women 1-0 East Bergholt Ladies.

Needham were required to clear the ball of the line on 48 minutes, as a visiting corner on the right was headed goalwards at the far post but was cleared off the line as the rebound was put wide off the left post by a player sliding in. Rainbird then had a shot deflected, on 50 minutes, in the box behind the left post for a corner- which was headed at goal from the near post as East Bergholt headed off the line. The rebound was then headed back at goal followed by the away side clearing behind for another corner.

On 51 minutes, the away side countered as their shot on the edge of the box was tipped onto the bar as Needham cleared away, closely followed by Needham No.8's low strike from the edge of the box going wide off the left post a minute later. Ten minutes into the second half, the hosts shot on the edge of the box went straight to the keeper, closely followed by a free-kick being deflected just over the bar on 57 minutes.

The away side then equalised on 62 minutes, Jess Clark's long range strike towards the left post was just too much for Green to keep out, palming into her own net. However, the stand-in keeper made a decent stop a minute later, as the visitors stabbed the ball towards goal from close range, where the stopper got down well to save diving down to her left. Green then made another good stop on 65 minutes, as a East Bergholt free-kick on the right from  distance was shot towards the top near corner forcing the Needham keeper to rush over and tip over the bar.

The corner in on the right resulted in a second goal for the away side, as Lockerbie at the near post slotted the ball into the far corner, before the Champions headed a corner in on the left over the far post from the near post on 68 minutes. The visitors then won a free-kick on the right edge of the area on 70 minutes, but was curled over the top near corner by No.18.

The away side's No.8 then shot from the edge of the box but sidefooted over the bar, a minute later. The home side then had a shot blocked from the edge of the box on 73 minutes, before the home side's shot from outside the area was low but easy for the keeper- just a minute later. With 15 minutes on the clock Elena Nitsche gave her side a vital two goal lead, as the No.9 was set through down the middle whose shot beat the keeper. Just over ten minutes remained when Bergholt's No.4 went for goal outside the box but shot straight at Green.

On 85 minutes, Needham's No.9 found her way to the left edge of the box after beating two opponents but shot wide of the near post. The Reds then kept up the pressure late on as an 86th minute shot, on the right inside the box, was hit low but at the keeper at the near post. With 3 minutes to go Needham pulled a goal back to create nerves in the visiting minds as Rainbird was set through on the left side in the area who toe poked the ball into the bottom far corber past the desperately diving keeper.

Soon after kick off, a Needham 20-yard strike bounced just wide of the right post as the hosts came close to a quickfire double. Despite that, it was East Bergholt who had the last shot and touch of the game, as No.4's shot from the edge of the box went over the top right corner

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 45: October 2018 (Game 51/52)

Game 51/52: Sun 21 Oct 2018, 10:30am Premier Logos Bury & Districts Sunday FL Division One & Days Sports Div 4 KO Cup, Hardwick Heath Pitches 1 & 3, Morten Hall Youth FC Ferals v Bury Bowl FC & Rougham FC v Chedburgh FC

*Note: Not all of major action I saw from Rougham game is included so I could focus on getting as much down for Ferals v Bowl match.

Morten Hall Youth FC Ferals beat Bury Bowl 7-2 on a very warm Sunday morning.

The Ferals went 1-0 up on 2 minutes, as a great lobbed finish by Waterson over the Bowl keeper and into the top far corner from 30-yards on the right. Ferals doubled their lead a minute later, as Nichols 20-yard strike on the left found the bottom near corner with the Ferals hitting the front early. Back came Bowl, as Stunza attacked down the right 4 minutes into the match.

However, his shot at the near post inside the area was straight at Fallows. Ferals then countered, as Nichols on the right inside the box squared for Newdick at the far post, to tap into the net from point blank range- but were denied by the offside flag. The two sides then exchanged shots in similar style on 7 & 8 minutes.

The first seeing Ferals and Walsham striker Nichols in possession on the right in the box as his low shot dragged just wide off the far post, as Propustins' strike from the left edge of the box faced the same result.

Ben Newdick then had two shots for the Ferals within 3 minutes of each other, as the first on 10 minutes saw the youngster head a cross in from the right wide at the near post from close range. The second then saw his effort on the left byline go into the sidenetting.

Cutting over to Rougham's game quickly, the home side volleyed (at least it looked like it) superb effort on the right in the area into thenet for 1-0 on 16 minutes, and then doubled it on 20 minutes.

Back to the Ferals v Bowl, as the home side almost had their third goal, as Newdick squared the ball from the left to Nichols in the middle, whose shot hit the near post before somehow staying out, after bouncing off the keeper on 18 minutes.

Ferals then made it 3-0 two minutes later, as the ball fell to Newdick on the left side in the area, as the home man fired a low strike into the near corner. Will Stobbard then had a shot on target on 30 minutes, as his 18-yard curler was straight at the keeper, at his right post.

Ferals had four after 31 minutes, as Dove's strike from the edge of the area made its way to the bottom left corner, as the same man went close a minute later. This time his long range strike towards the right post was deflected behind the near post. High fives for Ferals with 11 minutes to go before the break, as the ball fell to Jake Peasgood on the right in the box who slotted ball home from close range.

Ferals arguably should've had a sixth goal on 39 minutes, as a home shot on the right inside the box was palmed away by the keeper. The ball fell to Newdick in the middle who skied over the top from close range. Stunza then went close for Bowl on 40 minutes, as his shot on the right went wide off the near post.

Propustins was next in line to go for goal, but his strike on the right edge of the box went over the bar with 4 first half minutes to be played. Nichols then fired a low shot on the right wide off the far post on 42 minutes, before Bowl's shot from the edge of the box was deflected straight at the keeper a minute later.

Ferals then had the final chance of the opening half, as a cross in on the right fell to Newdick at the far post, with the volley overhit and going over the bar.

HALF TIME: Morten Hall Youth FC Ferals 5-0 Bury Bowl FC.

The second half was arguably not as entertaining, as the tempo of the game dropped in the second half, with Bowl heads picking up after having lost their focus due to conceding earlier on. However, Nichols managed to weave his way onto the left in the box, whose shot at the byline went wide off the far post two minutes into the second half. A minute later, Bury Bowl won a free-kick just inside the Ferals half on the left, with the shot hit off target at the far post.

Five minutes into the second half Bowl pulled a goal back, as Stanza's strike at goal from the left side in the Ferals box found the near corner, via the inside of the post. Harvey Addison then went close for Ferals on 54 minutes.

The ball falling to the substitute on the left side in the box, as the shot went wide of the near post. Bradley Peasgood then went close for Ferals a minute later, but hit his shot from outside the box off target. Dongray then went for goal on the edge of the box but fired wide of the bottom left corner on 58 minutes.

On the hour-mark, a low ball into the box on the left by Bowl found Stunza at the far post who on the turn shot wide. Stewart-Hogg and Dongray then played a one-two with the resulting shot saved by the keeper. The rebound fell to Asker who could only shoot wide from outside the box on 61 minutes.

Ferals then had two strikes blocked inside the area, as the first was scuffed with the second hit cleaner but fared no better, with 26 minutes to go. On 68 minutes, a Bowl strike from outside the box was caught well by Fallows diving down to his right, as a ball in from the visitors on the right found Stunza at the back post a minute later.

However, Stunza hashed his volley over the bar. Soon after, with 19 minutes remaining, Dongray went for goal on the left edge of the box as the low shot went wide off the far post. Bowl then had a low shot from the right edge of the box comfortably and easily saved by Fallows at his near post on 74 minutes, before Buckmuster went close two minutes later. The Bowl No.9's strike going wildly over the bar, closely followed by Dove's shot on the left edge of the box going just over the top far corner with 11 minutes on the clock.

On 81 minutes, Addison tried his luck at goal once more, with his strike on the left in the box firing the keeper to palm low behind his near post for a corner. Two minutes later, Propustins went for goal on the right but his low strike was caught with ease by Fallows down to his near post. With 6 minutes left  Ferals grabbed their sixth goal as the hosts shot on the left in the box was palmed out by the keeper to Stewart-Hogg in the middle, leaving the home man an easy task of tapping into an empty net.

The same man's cut back on the right byline in the box just evades the run of of Dongray with the cutback in on the opposite side finding the former who shot wide of the left post. Credit to Bowl's keeper Stuart Evans who kept the hosts down to six on 87 minutes as Jake Peasgood was fed on the right in the box, as his first effort was kept out well by Evans with the keeper blocking the same man's rebound effort.

Stewart-Hogg then made it 7-1 on 88 minutes, as he picked out the right corner getting a brace in the process. Straight from kickoff, a Bowl speculative effort straight from kickoff to lob Fallows went just over the bar as the game kept giving until the end. Questionable defending from Ferals on 90 minutes allowed Bustmuster to intercept a weak header back to Fallows, as the Bowl's striker rounded the keeper, on the left side in the area, before dispatching the ball into the bottom near corner.

Fallows was then tested a minute into stoppage time, but was up to the task saving down to his right as Ferals ran out 7-2 winners.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 44: October 2018 (Game 50)

Game 48: Sat 20 Oct 2018, 3pm, The Grove, Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Central Division, Halesowen Town v Needham Market

Needham Market fight back to win a deserved point at Halesowen, thanks to substitute Reece Dobson's equaliser. 

The game was fairly equal throughout, as both teams were poor in terms of finishing, with Halesowen having the first chance, on 5 minutes. Bragoli's low shot from the edge of the box being caught by Jessup down to his right.  

Arguably, Ingram was Needham MOTM for me, with the winger through down the centre following a ball over the top, but scuffed his half volley towards the right post making it easy for the keeper, on 6 minutes. Then on 8 minutes, a Needham ball from the right to Kamanzi on the edge of the box as his headed flick on found Mills at the far post in the area, where the offside Needham man blasted over the bar.  On 12 minutes the Marketmen went close again, as a Needham ball upfield was this time flicked on by the head of Ingram onto skipper Heath on the edge of the box but saw his low shot at the right post saved by the foot of the keeper for a corner on the left. The ball in though was headed wide by Ingram at the far post. Six minutes later, Mills whipped in a fantastic cross in on the left which picked out Issa at the far post.

Unfortunately for Needham though, Issa could only get underneath the ball, as he headed off target. On the half-hour mark, Issa was involved again but the on-loan Colchester man was only able to end his run upfield by skrewing a 25-yard strike wide off the right post. Back came Halesowen on 33 minutes, as Shamsi was allowed space on the edge of the visiting box, but saw his shot tipped over the bar by Jessup. As the resulting set-piece in on the right was headed towards the near post but was deflected behind for a second corner. Although that came to nothing, Halesowen were foiled again by the Needham stopper, as a low shot on the left edge of the box was palmed away by Jessup diving across at his near post, with nine minutes to play before the break. The impressive Sturgess then went on a run up the left for Needham, but fired wide off the near post as both sides hunted the opening goal, on 37 minutes. 

Halesowen then cut in from the left themselves, to the edge of the box, but shot low and straight at Jessup on 39 minutes. Then on 40 minutes, another Halesowen shot, from the right-side in the box, was cleared away from the near post, with Needham having a half chance of their own two minutes before half-time. 

Mills cut in from the left wing to the edge of the box, where he teed up Jeremiah Kamanzi whose first time low strike was straight at the keeper- which was the final notable first half action as the opening 45 minutes ended goalless. 

HALF TIME: Halesowen Town 0-0 Needham Market. 

The Marketmen went close again on 46 minutes, as a cross in from the right was flicked on by Heath in the middle but was put just wide by Adam Mills at the far post. The hosts then almost took the lead themselves on 49 minutes, as their corner in on the right was headed at goal at the near post, as Needham cleared off the line and were able to scramble away after a brief bit of pinball in the box. 

Captain Gareth Heath then forced Gregory into a good save down to his right, saving a low free-kick from the edge of the area at his near post, on 50 minutes. Shamsi then had another low strike at goal from the edge of the box but shot straight at Jessup on 53 minutes. 

Mills then shot straight at the keeper on 54 minutes, from outside the box as both sides forced the keeper into routine saves. The home side then won a free-kick just inside the Needham half, as the ball came out to the right edge of the box where it was fired over the top far corner, on 56 minutes. 

Halesowen though did take the lead on 58 minutes, through ex-West Bromwich Albion and Nott's County man Lee Hughes. The home side's counter lead to a cross to the far post from the right wing being tapped into the bottom far corner by the striker from point blank range, despite Jessup getting a hand to the shot. On the hour mark, Needham responded by firing a low strike from outside the box just wide of the left post, as Halesowen had a shot blocked on the edge of the box from the resulting goal-kick. The hosts then won a corner on the left, as Hughes headed wide from a couple of yards out at the near post on 61 minutes. Shamsi then went for goal once more, from the left side in the box, as Jessup spilt the shot but was cleared by the defender regardless, on 63 minutes. Five minutes later, the same man was in possession down the middle, as he set Hayles-Docherty through on the right in the box but was shot over the bar with Jessup advancing. 

Needham then fought back, as Mills swerved past the defence and onto the left side in the box but saw his shot deflected wide off the near post on 72 minutes, as the Needham left winger then tried again three minutes later. 

However, the low shot from the left edge of the box was easy for the keeper, at his near post. The away side then grabbed an equaliser with 14 minutes to play, as a Needham cross in on the right found Dobson in the six yard box, at the near post, who rifled the ball into roof of the net on the turn. 

The Marketmen then had two further chances to snatch a late win, as Sturgess made his way to the left side inside the area, as his shot was deflected wide of the near post on 85 minutes. Closely followed by Mills being picked out on the right in the box, who rather than picking out Dobson in the middle shot just wide of the far post instead- with the final chance on 86 minutes but having said that I'd say a point was well deserved as Needham extended their unbeaten run to three matches.

Young Marketmen Pick Up Deserved Win

Needham Market Reserves defeated Debenham LC to deservedly get three more points on the board.

Debenham though had the first two major shots of the game, as Guy's free-kick on the left edge of the box went over the near post a minute in. Closely followed by Jennings' shot on the right coming back into play off the crossbar. The Young Marketmen had their first shot on 4 minutes as their shot on the leftvtowards the top far corner was palmed away by Welton.

However, it was Needham who scored with the first shot on target of the game, on 10 minutes. After Clayton-Leek's run up the pitch, he set Hayes through on the left inside the box who teed it up at the far post past the onrushing Welton, for Page to bundle over the line sliding in- despite the attempts of the defender to put him off. The visitors then had a shot blocked on 11 minutes, before Clayton-Leek's shot on the left-side in the box went just wide off the near post.

The hosts then hit an effort from the right wing straight at Welton's midrift at his near post on 28 minutes, before the keeper saved Collard's low shot in the box down to his left, at his near post five minutes later. However, the corner was sent wide off the near post.

The Reds then thought they had a second, when Collard was set through on the left side in the box on 34 minutes, his shot beat the diving Welton but came back into play off the inside off the post. The hosts though, despite being all over Debenham in attack were lucky not to concede on 38 minutes, as a scramble in the Needham box resulted in a shot on goal from the left side in the area but was blocked off the line as the home defence smacked it away to safety. The Hornets then shot wide off the left post on 40 minutes, with Collard firing over the top right corner from the edge of the box a minute later. Debenham didn't hear the referee's whistle on 42 minutes, as a Needham man was down injured as Debenham shot past Cook and into the bottom left corner, having not realised- which meant that Needham went into the break a goal up.


HALF TIME Needham Market Reserves 1-0 Debenham LC.

Two minutes after the interval, Debenham won a corner on the right, which was headed at goal at the far post as a Needham defender headed off the line and blocked the rebound shot.

Needham then went on the counter as Collard was through on right in box, as his low shot towards the near post was palmed behind by Welton. Then on 49 minutes the hosts went close again as the corner in on the right fell just inside the box as the shot towards the near post was deflected just wide.

The visitors then found themselves on the right side in the box, but the deflected shot was easy for Cook on 50 minutes, as Debenham shot wide off Cook's right post from inside the area- just two minutes later. The Young Marketmen went close again to a second goal on 53 minutes, as Clayton-Leek kept the ball in play on the left byline in the area with Collard's low shot at the near post cleared away by the defender. On the hour mark, McCrory tried his luck from the left edge of the box but was blocked by Codrington. The visitors then won a corner on 64 minutes, but could only put the setpiece in on the right over the bar. The visitors then headed a cross in from the left straight at Cook at his near post on 66 minutes. Clayton-Leek then had a go from the left edge of the box, as his firece effort went over the nesr post just sixty seconds later.

The hosts went close again to a second on 71 minutes, as Page was set one-on-one in the box but just stabbed his shot wide off the left post. Clayton-Leek was then fed through on the left in the Debenham box but again the low shot went wide- this time off the far post on 75 minutes.

Debenham then had the next three chances, as Carvell's low shot from the left edge of the box went wide off the far post on 78 minutes, with the second seeing an acrobatic shot on the left in the box gathered by Cook at his far post, a minute later. The third and final Debenham chance fell on 86 minutes, as Howell was in acres of space on the right and failed to taje advantage, firing wide off the top near corner.

With the final chance of the evening, Needham went close again to a second goal on 90 minutes, as Welton's clearance fell to a Needham man who spotted the keeper out off his goal with the shot bouncing just over the bar, as the hosts were forced to settle for just the one goal for a well deserved victory.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 42: October 2018 (Game 48)

Game 48: Tues 16 Oct 2018, Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Central Division, Bloomfields, 7:45pm, Needham Market v Lowestoft Town

Needham Market made it two wins on the bounce after a narrow win over local rivals Lowestoft Town.

McKendry had the first major shot of note in the encounter, as his free-kick on the right edge of the box curled over the top near corner on 23 minutes. The Marketmen then won a corner out on the right, which was headed towards the far post from the near but was headed off the line by a defender on 38 minutes. Needham then had a free-kick on the right edge of the box on 40 minutes. However, the well hit low free-kick was matched by a good diving stop at his far post by the keeper. The hosts then headed wide from the corner, at the near post. A minute later, Leiston had a 20-yard effort deflected by Heath which was gathered by Jessup at his right post. Overall Needham edged the half, but wasn't without more chances for the Trawlerboys.

Lowestoft's 25-yarder hitting the bar with Jessup rooted on 43 minutes. Soon after, the visitors went close again, as their shot on the right inside the box saw Jessup off his line, to narrow down the angle, only for the visiting player to sidefoot wide off the far post. Sixty seconds later, Dobson found himself on the right byline inside the box, but could only fire his effort over the bar. Then two minutes into stoppage time, Eagle's 25-yard strike on the left went wide off the far post as the first half ended goalless.

HALF TIME: Needham Market 0-0 Lowestoft Town

The second half was slightly more lively, starting soon after the restart, when Needham won a corner on the right as Mills headed wide at the near post on 48 minutes. The same man went close again on 56 minutes, as the Needham winger got through on the left inside the box, as the Lowestoft keeper came sliding out but the home player could only stab wide off the far post. The visitors then had another shot on goal on the right inside the box but wss deflected as Jessup saved down to his right on 64 minutes.

McKendry then tried his luck from eighteen yards, but hit wide off the bottom right corner, on 68 minutes closely followed hy a Needham corner in on the left. Unfortunately for the Reds the corner was headed wide at the far post on 70 minutes. The Marketmen then crossed the ball into the box on 81 minures as seemingly a Needham man got a touch on it but the keeper was behind it anyway at his far post. The away side then had another free-kick on the right edge of the Needham area on 83 minutes as Jessup saved down at his far post.

With five minutes left a Needham shot on the left edge of the box went wide off the far post, followed by a Needham ball in on the left met by the head of Issa, who could only head over the left post from the back post on 86 minutes.

The Marketmen then grabbed a late winner three minutes into stoppage time, as Marsden's cross in from the right was headed down into the ground by Issa at the far post, which bounced up and over the keeper to send the home fans in a joyful frenzy with almost the last touch of the match.

My Season Review 2018/19 Part 40: October 2018 (Game 46)

Game 46: Sun 14 Oct 2018, 10:30am Suffolk Sunday Cup Second Round, Gainsborough Plating Fields, Horringer Social Club v Brandon Town Community

Horringer Socials Club defeat Brandon empathically to progress in the Suffolk FA Sunday Cup on a day where it rained goals, both metaphorically and literally. 

The hosts had a shot at goal as early as the second minute, as No.6's low shot on the right was straight the keeper at his near post, soon followed by the opening goal. 

Horringer's No.9 put a low ball across goal at the right byline in the area, as No.7 tapped into the far post from the right post. The Bunnies certainly chased the carrot at the end of the string, in other words a cup win, as they deservedly extended their lead on 10 minutes, after a well hit shot found the bottom left corner from the right edge of the box. The hosts then hared towards victory, as they made it 3-0 on 12 minutes after a loq ball in on the right was stabbed wide from close range at the near post, before the home side found the net from the left shortly after. I said at the time, "this could be a massacre" and I would say it pretty much ended up like that. Brandon's day got even worse on 26 minutes, as Avis was slotted through 1-on-1 in the box, who then guided the ball into the bottom right corner, past the onrushing goalkeeper. Just before the half-an-hour mark, Brandon then had a shot from the left edge of the box kept out, having been shot straight at the home keeper. 

Back down the other end, Horringer went for goal on the left side in the area, but was saved low by the keeper at his near post, as the rebound strike was blocked from going into the unguarded net. 

On 31 minutes, Horringer had a low shot on the right byline inside the box kicked behind the near post by the keeper as the hosts hunted a fifth goal. They then got it on 32 minutes, as the ball squared in from the right inside the box was tapped in from point blank range in the middle. The hosts then concluded a weird 43 minute half (not sure why, but second half timings are as if it was a 45 minute first half to avoid confusion) as shot from outside the box went wide off the top right corner 

HALF TIME: Horringer Socials Club 5-0 Brandon Town CFC 

The second half saw Brandon come out and play more confident football after a damaging start to the 2nd Round tie, as Horringer missed several chances to add to their five first half goals. 

This was the case on 51 minutes, as a Horringer ball squared in from the right in the box, across goal as the keeper stopped the shot with the rebound on the left fired over the near corner. Brandon then won a corner on 55 minutes, after a well hit shot on the right was deflected wide off the near post. From the resulting corner, the ball in was helped on it's way as Brandon bundled the ball into the net from close range as they pulled a goal back for 5-1. A minute later, Horringer had a shot from the right edge of the box but only hit it straight at the keeper. The hosts then had another shot on goal on 58 minutes, as No.11's low shot on the left inside the box was saved by the feet of the keeper. On the hour mark though, Brandon No.14 had a shot blocked on the edge of the box, as the same man had a low curler on the left edge of the Horringer box gathered by the keeper at his far post a minute later. The visitors went close again on 63 minutes, as a well hit low volley on the right in the area was saved down to his left by the keeper who spilt the ball, with Brandon unable to take advantage. 

Back came the Bunnies on 64 minutes though, as Socials' No.6 went for goal on the left inside the box as the keeper got a hand on the shot down at his near post, as the ball came back into play off the inside of the post as Brandon were relieved to clear their lines. The five goal lead was restored on 66 minutes however, as the ball was squared across goal from the right in the box, as Avis' first time effort slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. The home side went close again on 68 minutes, as No.7's low strike from the edge of the box was saved by the keeper, as the visitors cleared the rebound away. Three minutes later, the lead was reduced down to four once more, as a Brandon cross in from the right was headed over the keeper at the near post, despite the keeper getting near it and going just above him. On 72 minutes the away side had a decent chance to make it 6-3, as No.10's 20-yard low strike went wide off the left post. 

Horringer's No.6 then had a shot on the right edge of the box, but was kicked away by the keeper on 74 minutes. Brandon then had a low shot on the right side fired straight at the keeper, at his near post on 78 minutes. The hosts then came back and had a low shot on the right in the box of their own. 

However, the keeper got down to palm away at his near post on 81 minutes, as Horringer restored their five goal lead once more three minutes later. Avis found his way through on the right in the box, and dispatched the ball into the bottom corner. There was still chance for more goals, as Brandon shot wide off the far post on the right on 85 minutes, before another shot from the same side was deflected wide of the far post for a corner with 2 minutes to go. The second ball in then fell to the Brandon keeper (for some reason he came up for the set-piece) who missed the target from close range, on 89 minutes. 

Soon after, Horringer found themselves through one-on-one in the box but the chip over the keeper went wide off the right post, as the game entered stoppage time. Then with the final shot of the match, a Horringer shot on the left edge of the area was deflected towards the near post but was palmed away low down by the keeper, as Horringer progressed in the cup.
