Ipswich Town v Buxton | 27.11.2022 | Emirates Football Association Challenge (FA) Cup 2nd Round Proper |

Ipswich Town advance to the Third Round of the Emirates FA Cup for the first time in four seasons following a 4-0 victory over Vanarama National League North side Buxton. 

The Sky Bet EFL League One side's quality showed, despite a valiant performance from the Non League side. 

Town dominated proceedings and nearly broke the deadlock after just 3 minutes, a right wing cross picked out Conor Chaplin free from six yards out whose header was glanced just wide of the top near.

The first shot on target then followed two minutes later, the ball fell to Conor Chaplin on the right-hand edge of the box, whose low fierce strike was creeping into the bottom near corner, forcing a good diving save from goalkeeper Theo Richardson who held onto the effort well. 

Buxton up other end did test Christian Walton two minutes later, albeit a comfortable save for the Town number 1, with the low shot from the edge at the box hit straight at the goalkeeper to catch. 

While Wes Burns' cross driven across the box was punched away by goalkeeper Theo Richardson in the 9th minute, Gassan Ahadme's header from point blank range, following Leif Davis' great left wing corner, went just wide of the top near corner three minutes later. 

Chances continued to fall for Town, Burns again whipped in a dangerous right wing cross into the danger area, only this time Richardson was alert on his line to claim the ball well with Town players arriving from point blank range on 14 minutes, while the winger's powerful cross-shot from distance out on the right wing went straight into Richardson's chest soon after. 

Davis' left wing cross then picked out Conor Chaplin free from close range on 17 minutes, but the attacking midfielder's effort was deflected wide into the bottom near side-netting for an Ipswich corner. Chaplin turned provider a minute later though, the latter was fed through on the left hand side of the box to lift a great ball across, which was glanced onto the unmarked Ahadme but his close range header went straight to Richardson. 

Chaplin, who was by far the Man Of The Match, then drew a good stop from Richardson on 22 minutes, the Town number 10's dangerous 30-yard free-kick took a deflection off the wall towards the bottom near corner, which Richardson did well to recover and pounce on the ball after initially spilling it. 

Had it not been for the woodwork, Town would've taken the lead just after the half-hour mark, after Richard Keogh's strike following a left wing corner was blocked, the ball fell to Cameron Humphreys on the left-hand edge of the box whose fierce strike went just over, via a deflection off the top of the crossbar. 

With two goals in the space of five minutes, Town quickly took advantage of the 3 leagues difference. Wes Burns capped a brilliant surfing run with a great low cross into the box from the right wing, finding Conor Chaplin from 8-yards out who took a good touch to control it before unleashing a smart powerful left footed strike into the bottom right hand corner for his seventh goal of the campaign, and first in any cup competition, as well as his 18th goal of his Town career, 1-0 Ipswich after 33 minutes. 

It was soon 2-0 to the Blues, captain Sam Morsy threaded a great ball to find goalscorer Chaplin, he in turn found Kyle Edwards on the spin, the latter cleverly beat his defender before lifting a great ball across the six yard box for Gassan Ahadme to turn home his maiden Town goal, on the slide into the empty net from 3-yards out. 

Three minutes later, Conor Chaplin could only direct his close range diving header wide of the near post from Edwards' brilliant left wing cross, a minute prior to Wes Burns' ball smashed across the six yard box being parried away by the diving Richardson at his near post, where a Buxton defender duly smacked the ball behind for a corner which saw a free header towards the roof of the net crucially cleared off the line.

Town then looked to test Richardson on 45 minutes, but the free header from another great left wing delivery was headed straight at the Bucks' shot-stopper. 

Town started the second half though displaying the same attacking intent as the first half, substitute Tawanda Chirewa was quick to twat Richardson just five minutes after the restart. The youngster was fed into space on the edge of the box to smash a great shot across goal towards the bottom right hand corner, forcing Richardson to smartly dive down and beat the ball away. 

Ahadme meanwhile saw a great glancing header at the far post denied by the face of the left-hand post from Burns' audacious right wing cross five minutes later, while Kyle Edwards' close range bicycle kick went over the bar from substitute Luke Woolfenden's right wing ball on 62 minutes. 

Seven minutes later, another Town substitute Kayden Jackson went close to extending Town's lead, the forward just unable to connect with a great left wing ball across from six yards out.

But with the goal of the night and arguably one of the best of the competition, Conor Chaplin stole the headlines with a beautiful finish in the 73rd minute. Alfie Armin leapt highest to nod the ball onto the midfielder in space on the left-hand edge of the box, who rifled a rocket of a strike into the top far corner for his second goal of the evening, 3-0 Ipswich. 

A vital goal-line clearance from Albie Armin however preserved Town's clean sheet with Buxton's best opportunity of the game on 76 minutes, Max Conway - making his debut on-loan from Bolton Wanderers - broke into the box down the left-hand side, drawing Walton off his line in the process although the shot at goal was crucially cleared just ahead of the goal-line by Armin with Walton off his line. The rebound though fell to Harry Bunn whose shot was deflected just wide of the bottom near left hand corner for the visitors'first corner of the night, which saw a shot at the far post blocked. 

After Kieran McKenna handed a First Team debut to Matt Ward late on, an insane one handed catch from Richardson denied Town a fourth goal after 86 minutes. Kyle Edwards broke onto the left-hand byline in acres of space to lift a great ball across to Chaplin at the far post, the latter leapt highest to head the ball across goal only to be denied a hat-trick by the outstretched right arm of Richardson to brilliantly hold onto the ball.

Town however did wrap up proceedings with a fourth goal in the second minute of stoppage time, Kayden Jackson picked the pocket of a Buxton player midway through the away side's half before driving onto the edge of the box to slam home his third goal of the season and 24th for the club into the bottom left hand corner. 

A valiant effort from Buxton however sees their FA Cup run draw to a close, while Ipswich progress to the Third Round Proper for the first time in four season with the reward a home tie against familiar opponents Rotherham United, who are now in the Sky Bet EFL Championship, most likely to be played on Saturday 7th January 2023 at Portman Road.

The Emirates FA Cup | Games I Have Went To | 2015-present | Preliminary Round - Third Round Proper | As of 17.11.2022

Over the course of just under 8 years, I've experienced the magic and heartbreak of the Emirates Football Association Challenge Cup - or as we all know it in its shorter name, the FA Cup.

Like every other football fan, I loved watching the FA Cup growing up - with my earliest memories of it watching Ryan Giggs dispatching a second minute penalty as Manchester United beat Liverpool in the 3rd Round on January 9th 2011. That campaign stands out to me, not just because it's the first real FA Cup season I watched on TV, but partly also because Manchester United made the Semi Finals of that season. Well, those two reasons and because I was glued to every game of it shown live on TV, including every round that Manchester United featured in. 

From then on I dreamed of watching an FA Cup game in person, which eventually became reality on my birthday in 2015, as I watched my local professional side, then Sky Bet Championship, Ipswich Town take on Premier League opposition in Southampton at Portman Road in a 3rd Round (Proper) Replay. Fittingly, it was also broadcast live on BBC 1 and if my memory serves right I was later able to spot myself during the coverage in the stands - though from a distance on a replay camera angle. Town unfortunately lost 1-0 after Shane Long scored the winner in the first half, just after Town were denied an opener of their own by the assistant referee's offside flag to rule out Stephen Hunt's clever finish past Fraser Forster.

Result aside, an experience I really enjoyed, finally getting to experience the FA Cup live in person! 

After that, I only had just under 8 months to wait before my next FA Cup game in person, fittingly this one was my first EVER Non League game, as I headed down to Ram Meadow to watch Ryman Isthmian League Division One North (step 4 non league, or step 8 overall) and my hometown side Bury Town take on Cockfosters. Bao gave the visitors a second minute lead, only for Justin Miller, with a goal in each half, to turn the game on it's head and earn the Blues a spot in the 2nd Qualifying Round. What a way to experience my first non league game, but for it to be in the FA Cup! I won't lie I still remember Miller netting the match-winning goal even now!

Over 11 months separated that game and my third game in the famous English club cup competition. Again, Ram Meadow was the destination, this time for the Preliminary Round, albeit this occasion was one to forget for the hosting Blues as Spaulding United ran out deserved 3-0 winners. Frustrating day for the Blues, but an opportunity I guess to have seen a new opposition that Bury wouldn't otherwise face in the league, which in fairness I always like seeing new teams, though the result wasn't ideal of course. 

Nonetheless a year pretty much to the day later, it was back to the home of Bury Town FC, once more for a Preliminary Round clash. This time it was fellow Isthmian League North Division side Tilbury. The dramatic encounter though ended in the Essex side's favour, who progressed by 2 goals to 1, despite Darren Mills' consolation giving Bury hope. 

Just shy of 5 months later and I was able to experience another FA Cup game in person. Back to Portman Road it was for the early 2017/18 Third Round Proper all Championship clash between hosts Ipswich Town and Sheffield United. Once again it went the way of the visitors as Thomas smashed home from memory a 25-yard rocket to book the Blades spot in the Fourth Round Proper.

Seven or so months later, it was off to Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Premier Division side Stowmarket Town's Greens Meadow for their Extra Preliminary Round clash with higher league Isthmian League Division One North opponents Basildon United. A good game to watch, but the visitors proved to be too much for the Old Gold & Blacks with Moses' brace the difference in a 2-0 away victory. 

Shortly over a month passed, for what was at the time the shortest time between FA Cup games for me, with this 2nd Qualifying Round Replay at Bloomfields being my first as a club official/volunteer. Southern League Central Premier Division newcomers Needham Market U23 hosted familiar Isthmian League Premier Division foes Metropolitan (Met) Police. The Marketmen started the encounter well, with Luke Ingram and Reece Dobson quickly putting the Reds 2-0 up after 27 minutes, although the visitors quickly got a goal back just three minutes later. The away side then equalised in the second half, before scoring the winning goal early into extra time. The first time I'd seen Extra Time, or even a draw at ninety minutes, in the FA Cup - even if it didn't go the way I would've hoped, a typical FA Cup tie that went this way and that! 

Just shy of a year later, Bloomfields was the destination again in a 1st Qualifying Round Replay, this time the Marketmen had a league advantage over their opponents with Isthmian League North Division side Dereham Town travelling to Suffolk. Gareth Heath and Joe Neal, despite a late consolation from the Norfolk side, sealed the Reds' spot into the next round, in a deserved victory. Finally, a second home win, ultimately also the second win for the team I was supporting, that I'd seen in the famous national cup competition.

Another year passed by before I got to experience my first away FA Cup game overall and with Needham Market. A trip to fellow Southern League Central Premier Division team Hitchin Town's Top Fields it was for a 1st Qualifying Round encounter. It was a good night overall, despite that it wasn't the visitors' night as they fell to a 3-0 defeat. Fun fact though, the first interview I had conducted following an FA Cup game. 

Onto last season, in which I saw 3 games in the FA Cup - including a new ground for the second time for me in the competition. First, Needham Market recorded their first win of the season with a deserved 1-0 home win over fellow league opponents St Ives Town, courtesy of summer signing Kyle Hammond's maiden Needham goal. That set up a 2nd Qualifying Round trip to Rookery Hill, the home of Isthmian League Premier Division team East Thurrock United. A topsy-turvy encounter ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw - after going from 1-0 to 1-2 (in Needham's favour) to 2-2, with Ben Fowkes and Academy graduate Noah Collard on target for the Marketmen. A good day overall, enjoyed seeing a new ground, but also couldn't really complain about still being in the competition.

Back to Bloomfields the tie went for the replay, which saw the away side lead 2-0 at the break, while the Marketmen hit back level in the second half, courtesy of goals from Josh Pollard and a second goal in the tie from Ben Fowkes. However, in one last twist the away side snatched the victory just prior to extra time with an 83rd minute penalty. Another dramatic cup tie, something we expect with the FA Cup, even though from a club perspective it didn't end the way we'd hoped. The gutting part was the winner already knew before kick off that their reward would be a trip to Boston United, which was a tie I would've quite liked Needham to reach, firstly because it would've been a new ground but also because I knew somebody that was a club volunteer at Boston. It wasn't to be though, but it has to be said that the club's FA Trophy run made up for that. The run to the Quarter-Finals at least brought us some good cup success in a national competition for the season.

The opposite can be said of this season's FA Cup adventure though. Thoroughly enjoyable and a perfect example of the magic of the competition! Before Needham entered this year's competition, I headed to Greens Meadow for what proved to be a great cup encounter for the neutrals between hosts Stowmarket Town and AFC Sudbury, in an all Isthmian North Division clash. All in attendance, myself included, rather got value for money with a five goal thriller that wasn't far away from a penalty shootout. Former Yeovil Town professional Ed Upson broke the deadlock for Stow after just eight minutes with a free-kick that at the time I remarked was the best ever free-kick I'd seen in the flesh, with no offence to anyone else who I've seen score a quality free-kick before.  Fitting for that to happen in the FA Cup! Sudbury hit back and equalised before half-time through Nwachuku, while Joe Grimwood's second half goal gave the travelling yellows the lead, instantly cancelled out though by another ex-professional in Reggie Thompson-Lambe. To extra time the entertaining encounter went, which remained level until just after the break in extra time. Caley-Brown then edged the crazy swinging Suffolk rivalry in the away side's favour, who advanced to a 1st Qualifying Round trip to fierce Suffolk rivals Bury Town.

My FA Cup journey for the season so far however continued at Bloomfields, ironically with another Suffolk Derby in the 1st Qualifying Round. Another all league affair as Needham Market welcomed Leiston. Ex-Marketman Will Davies gave Leiston the lead from a free-kick, before ex-Leiston midfielder Patrick Brothers levelled proceedings for the home side just before the break. A great performance from the Reds was marked fittingly by a first Needham goal by summer signing Jacob Lay, with fellow new recruit Ross Crane wrapping up a fine 3-1 win towards the end. 

The 2nd Qualifying Round Draw saw Needham drawn at home to Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Premier Division side Sheringham, who had thrived being underdogs in previous rounds and set up quite a fascinating encounter. The home side's higher league status did show, despite a brilliant performance from the visiting goalkeeper, with Lay and Crane on target to book the Reds a place into the 3rd Qualifying Round. Another example of what the FA Cup is about, all it takes is an inspired goalkeeping performance and it can create a bit of nerves as it only takes one chance to score, though Garnham was rarely troubled - but credit to Sheringham who showed why they deserved to make it to that stage of the competition.

Another home tie matched Needham at home to familiar Isthmian League Premier Division side Brightlingsea Regent. With torrential rain falling, second half goals from Jacob Lay, who scored his 3rd goal in as many FA Cup ties, and the returning Luke Ingram sending Needham through to the 4th Qualifying Round for the second time in their history. Despite the rain, a terrific occasion to be part of!

The draw then took place on TalkSport 2, with Needham again at home, this time against Vanarama National League side Maidstone United. This game had the same feeling of the Wealdstone FA Trophy game last December, the home side going into it as underdogs but fancying their chances against a team fairly low down in their division two leagues above. Similarly to that day, Luke Ingram scored in the first half, only this time it was the opening and only goal. The striker sneaked the ball past the goalkeeper to book Needham's spot in the 1st Round Proper for the first time ever. A game that will be remembered for the occasion, but also for the tense feeling of excitement that accompanied the final minutes. 

So a live draw on BBC 2 awaited the Marketmen, who were drawn out away at Sky Bet EFL League One strugglers Burton Albion. Again, making Needham the underdog, but one which Needham travelled to the Pirelli Stadium feeling they had a chance. They pushed their higher league hosts all the way, almost equalising late in stoppage time with Jake Dye's goal-bound shot blocked, after the home side had buried home the opening goal on the rebound on 34 minutes. A proud performance and valiant effort from the Marketmen however ended in a 2-0 slightly harsh defeat as the Brewers snuck a second with the last kick of the game. Result aside, an experience to remember, not just from a club perspective giving how big the game was of course, but personally with it featuring my first ever EFL Press Box & first piece featured in an EFL Club's Matchday Programme.

The highs and lows of the FA Cup, some I'll definitely remember, some moments to forget, but personally still think the last two FA Cup games will 100% stand out to me for the obvious reasons!

Bury Town Under-18s edged a tight affair with a 1-0 win over their Newmarket Town counterparts in a encounter that ended with 3 red cards between the two sides.

In an encounter that featured very few clear cut chances, the young Blues started brightly, whipping a dangerous low ball across the six yard box which Ben Curtis sliding in just couldn't latch onto after just 3 minutes. 

Curtis then forced an excellent save out of Newmarket goalkeeper Sumpter five minutes later, the attacking midfielder drove into space dangerously down the left-hand side before curling a fierce sumputous towards the top far corner, which was matched by the diving 'keeper to tip it over for a corner. 

Another terrific save from the visiting goalkeeper denied the Blues on 22 minutes, Charlie Smith picked up possession on the edge of the box, the Blues playmaker took a touch before moving into the box only to see his clever half volley towards the top left hand corner tipped over the bar by the swift diving reactions of Sumpter. 

Curtis meanwhile charged down the 'keeper's clearance, which looped up into the air, dropping just over onto the roof of the net for a goal-kick four minutes later.

At the other end, Ryan Cole forced a outstanding save from Bury goalkeeper Xander Brown after 34 minutes, the forward's ferocious 30-yard free-kick was on target, requiring Brown to brilliantly fly up to his top right hand corner and top it over for a corner as both sides went into the break level, after a fairly even half - with Bury having dominated the opening half of it and Newmarket doing likewise for the second half of the opening forty-five minutes. 

It was more of the same after the restart, though Bury were slightly more lively in front of goal for the first 15 minutes of the second half, as a Bury close range header looped just over the bar on 53 minutes.

Just before the hour mark though, Bury broke the deadlock courtesy of a clever finish from Ben Curtis, the attacking midfielder weaved into the box before cooly finishing into the bottom right hand corner, 1-0 Bury. 

While that was how the scoreline would remain for the remainder of the night, that was far from it in terms of action. 

The young Jockeys won back possession on the right hand edge of the box, but fired a fierce warning volleyed shot on the turn just wide of the bottom right hand corner on 70 minutes. 

Three minutes later, Ethan Leonard was threaded through dangerously past the defence, one on one with Brown, down the left-hand side only to to fire his shot across goal and just wide of the bottom far corner. 

At the other end, the young Blues went agonisingly close to doubling their lead on 74 minutes, Ethan Flack was found down the left hand side of the box, but hit a fierce strike, which would've been a goal had it been on target, just wide of the top near corner into the side netting.

Leonard meanwhile saw a powerful shot himself, after finding space on the left-hand edge of the box, parried just wide of the top far corner by Brown a minute later, before the away side went close again in the 78th minute, smashing a shot just over the top near right hand corner from inside the box. 

Jack Maher then had the final noteable chance of the night in the 80th minute, whipping a dangerous 30-yard free-kick just over the top near left-hand corner, before the game ended with 3 red cards in quick succession ten minutes later.

Charlie Smith and Ryan Cole first were second off for their reactions, while Henry Jolland was sent off for the original tackle. 

The Blues have since only had one game, away to Ely City - drawing 1-1 after a Ben Curtis penalty, but have since seen away games at Walsham Le Willows and Newmarket Town postponed, ahead of their return to action on Monday 14th November when they welcome Saffron Walden Town Community to the Atalian Servest Ram Meadow Stadium (7:45pm).

An entertaining encounter ends in a late 5-4 victory for Heybridge Swifts despite a good battling performance from Bury Town's U18 EJA side.

The visitors quickly raced into a two goal lead after 7 minutes, but the Blues got a foothold into the game and created some good chances. Henry Jolland went close for the home side, but fired his shot from 18-yards out a centimetre wide of the bottom left hand corner after 18 minutes. 

The midfielder again went close to putting the Blues in front after 23 minutes, a good Bury free-kick from distance found Jolland free at the far post, although the midfielder sidefooted his first time shot wide of the top right hand corner. 

After being teed up to shoot by Jolland, on the edge of the box, Harvey Lott forced the keeper to smother his low toepoked shot at goal fourteen minutes later, before the Blues halved the deficit with a good finish sixty seconds after. Henry Jolland latched onto a poor back pass inside the box to cooly finish home from close range into the bottom right hand near corner. 

George Talbot meanwhile saw a good curling strike on the edge of the box well claimed by the 'keeper well positioned at his left-hand near post on 45 minutes, while a dangerous low Bury ball across towards the midfielder was vitally cleared by the Heybridge defence five minutes later. 

After the break, the game sparked into life with both sides netting 3 goals each in an entertaining encounter. 

Bury started the second half like the finished the first, though George Talbot's 25-yard strike was well held by the 'keeper at his right-hand near post in the 47th minute. 

The Blues meanwhile had the ball in the net for the second time of the afternoon, only for the well taken goal to be chalked off by an offside flag three minutes later. Lott threaded the ball through past the defence to an offside blue shirt, he in turn teed up Alex Todd who smartly finished home first time into the bottom right hand corner from the edge of the box.

Heybridge on the other hand restored their 2 goal lead soon after, a right wing cross found Elongo inside the box whose smashed home on the volley into the middle of the net, 3-1.

Although the Blues had another goal, this time from Harvey Lott who took his finish well, disallowed in the 54th minute, the home side did make it 3-2 from the penalty spot after Teddy Hogg was fouled down the left-hand side of the box after 59 minutes. Up stepped Lott who fired home a good spot-kick down the middle, despite a touch of the diving goalkeeper. 

Harvey Lott then turned provider two minutes later, this time teeing up Jolland down the left-hand side of the box, whose low shot was deflected behind the bottom near corner for a Bury corner.

Bury continued their momentum, duly levelling proceedings on 62 minutes courtesy of a audacious strike from Alex Todd. The Bury youngster smacked a cracking shot off the woodwork to make it 3-3.

Straight at the other end a minute later, Bury 'keeper Ollie Kellett-Green made a great save to keep the scores level, diving down well to his far right-hand corner to beat behind a fierce low shot across goal from outside the box. 

The home shot-stopper again denied Heybridge with another great stop in the 69th minute, albeit offside anyway, the visitors broke through down the left hand side of the box only to be denied by the onrushing Kellett-Green.

Heybridge once more tested the Blues' stopper on 75 minutes, the away side broke into space down the left-hand side of the box but fired their strike straight at Kellett-Green's chest at his near post. 

At this point the game was a thoroughly end to end affair, with the away side again breaking into the box dangerously five minutes later, however the Bury 'keeper was again hard to beat, smothering the low shot at his near post.

Kellett-Green's again held onto a close range shot fired strike at him on 86 minutes, while Bury took the lead for the first time in the game just two minutes later. A stunning goal it was too, Ethan Hynes was threaded through down the left-hand side of the box before cooly finishing into the bottom far corner, 4-3. 

Hynes was then unfortunate to see his good curling, dangerously positioned, free-kick over the top far corner on 90+2 minutes, though Heybridge equalised four minutes later. 

A right wing low ball into the box saw a low shot well saved by Kellett-Green, although the rebound was finished well by Elongo, low into the middle of the net, 4-4.

Heybridge edged the nine goal thriller in their favour deep into stoppage time, Rogers found space on the edge of the box to fire a good finish into the roof of the net, 4-5. 

The Blues however still had a good opportunity to grab an equaliser after that, Teddy Hogg found space down the right hand side of the box only to agonisingly shoot straight at the keeper, who held onto it well. 

The EJA side are again in home action next Sunday, when they entertain Chelmsford City, while the Blues' U18 Thurlow Nunn side host Saffron Walden Town Community at the Atalian Servest Ram Meadow Stadium on Monday night.

Needham Market Under-18s advance to the Quarter-Finals of the Veo Suffolk Boys U18 Midweek Cup following a dominant 8-1 victory over Woodbridge Town at Bloomfields.

The young Marketmen, who featured a few names from the squad that made the Semi-Finals of the same competition in April, started the game on the front foot.

Just two minutes had been played when Luca Braddon smartly threaded Dimitri Gayle with a great through-ball down the right-hand side of the box, but his poked low shot towards goal was well held by visiting goalkeeper Calum Brooks.

Seth Chambers then fed Dimitri Gayle into space well down the left wing, a minute later, the winger neatly cut inside as he weaved past a few defenders on his way into the box, although his close range shot was blocked. The rebound then fell to Chambers whose shot on the turn was also well blocked from 8-yards out. 

Seconds later, the Needham striker was released through past the defence, one on one with Brooks, though his low shot was well gathered by the advancing goalkeeper. Needham however did break the deadlock with a well worked goal after 6 minutes.

After Taylor Clark's mazy run drew a foul in a dangerous position out on the left wing, the midfielder's clever quick low free-kick picked out Seth Chambers, who had peeled away at the near post to meet it and cleverly use the pace on the ball to sidefoot home first time into the bottom far corner, 1-0 Needham. 

Three minutes later, the home side had a good chance to quickly double their advantage, a good right wing low corner from Eddie Barker was dummied by Gayle for the onrushing Taylor Clark to hit a fierce shot over the top far corner.

Visiting keeper Brooks was forced into a good stop in the tenth minute, Clark lifted a great ball over the top to release Chambers through, onside, down the left-hand side of the box, albeit the striker's clever dinked shot was tipped away well by a smart reaction save from Brooks. 

It was virtually one way traffic for the first 70 minutes, with the vast majority of the clear cut chances falling to the young Reds. Captain Seth Chambers latched onto a good left wing cross in from close range, but could only direct his free far post header straight at the goalkeeper's chest on 15 minutes.

At the other end, Woodbridge did have a great opportunity on 17 minutes, though nobody in a Woodbridge shirt was around to tap home a dangerous ball squared across the face of goal. 

Seconds after Chambers saw a fierce low strike from the left-hand edge of the box blocked, the referee pointed to the penalty spot after Taylor Clark was brought down, having broken through down the rright-hand side of the box in the 19th minute.

Up-stepped the midfielder, who made it two goals in back to back Under-18 appearances - who scored in the win away to Leiston a fortnight ago - to thrash home a ferocious spot-kick past Brooks, who had guessed right, into the bottom left-hand corner, 2-0 Needham after 20 minutes.

Woodbridge though went up the other end a minute later and saw a close range shot well saved by the onrushing Lawrence Robinson, while the hosts went close to a third goal in the 22nd minute. Seth Chambers picked up possession, after a stray clearance, only for his powerful good strike from 20-yards to curl narrowly wide of the gaping top left-hand corner. 

Three minutes later, Gayle saw a good low shot blocked after being found by a well taken low Taylor Clark free-kick down the left-hand of the box, before Elliot Stevens was fed into space down the other end, although his deflected low shot was comfortably held by Lawrence Robinson in the 28th minute.

Needham on the other hand added their third goal in clinical fashion a minute later, first Dimitri Gayle was threaded through on left wing overlap who in turn squared a great low ball into Seth Chambers, who notably scored 5 goals in the Under-23's 8-5 win over cornard United just over a week earlier, where the striker smashed a ruthless close range shot low past the onrushing goalkeeper, and into the net despite the efforts of Stannard, for his second goal of the night, 3-0 Needham.

Chambers then turned provider shortly after the half-hour mark, the striker broke through onto the left-hand byline before pulling a great ball back to Eddie Barker arriving just outside the six yard box, albeit the fellow forward's first time shot was well gathered by the reaching Brooks. 

The chances kept falling for the home side, with Luca Braddon's low deflected shot on the edge of the box well gathered by Brooks on 33 minutes, just two minutes prior to the forward peeling away at the near post to latch onto a clever low left wing corner from Gayle, albeit his half-volleyed shot across goal went narrowly wide. 

Gayle again raced through well down the left wing dangerously, this time squaring a smart ball across to Seth Chambers at the back post, whose awkward close range first time shot on the half-volley went just wide of the top near corner.

Travis Buxton was next to try his luck at goal a minute before first half stoppage time, albeit the midfielder's fierce 25-yard rocket out on the right-hand side took a deflection off Stannard which forced Brooks to quickly change direction as he flew up welll to just hold onto the ball, with Dimitri Gayle arriving.

Needham however had the last chance of the first half, a minute into first half stoppage time, Ivan Sanchez raced through into space to square a sumputous ball to Chambers whose close range first time shot was well saved by Brooks.

The young Marketmen continued their dominance into the second half, quickly adding two further goals in the space of five minutes. First, Ivan Sanchez eploited space well down the left-hand side of the box to smash a brilliant low ball across, which went under the diving Brooks, leaving an open goal for the onrushing unmarked Luca Braddon to poke home his fifth goal of the season for the Under-18s into the vacant bottom far corner from 3 yards out, 4-0 after 47 minutes.

Logan Boyd then found space to hit a tame low strike at Lawrence Robinson on 51 minutes, while Needham made it 5-0 a minute later. Eddie Barker was fed into space down the left-hand side of the penalty area, the forward's sumputous low ball drilled across the six yard box was tipped away by a decent stop by the o=diving Brooks, but only as far as Seth Chambers, who showed his recent good form as the latter spun round his defender before smashing home his third goal of the night into the bottom left-hand corner.

Sixty seconds later, Taylor Clark looked to add to his goal tally with what would've been a world class finish, had it not been for a good stop from Brooks. The goalscorer was fed into space on the right-hand edge of the box where he unleashed a powerful strike low across goal, drawing a brilliant diving stop from the Woodbridge 'stopper, to tip the ball behind well. 

Eddie Barker's resulting well taken corner was then directed just wide by a bullet header from the unmarked Chambers on 54 minutes, while the two Edward Barkers combined to create a fantastic chance two minutes later.

Eddie Barker's dangerously positioned left wing free-kick picked out fellow namesake and forward Ed Barker free at the far post, though the substitute's header from a tight angle looped narrowly wide of the top right-hand corner.

Needham continued to be dangerous going forward on 57 minutes, the ball fell kindly to Eddie Barker outside the box whose fierce shot went narrowly over the top left-hand corner.

The relentless home side were soon rewarded with another brilliant goal just after the hour mark, Luca Braddon shrugged off a foul from the defender to keep possession well down the right wing as he drove through into the box, the forward then whipped a good ball to the unmarked Ed Barker who poked home instinctively into the roof of the net from close range, 6-0.

Clark again was unlucky not to add his second goal of the night after 63 minutes, smashing yet another great effort from the right-hand edge of the box agonisingly just wide of the bottom far corner. 

Ed Barker meanwhile saw a shot from point blank range well smothered by Brooks, while the forward's audacious diving skorpion kick effort just went over the crossbar on 66 minutes. 

Two minutes later, Clark then saw his driven low ball on a plate across the six yard box flash across goal with nobody in Red around to provide the finishing touch.

Braddon on the other hand fired a great strike, from inside the box, narrowly wide of the near right-hand post on 69 minutes, before Eddie Barker added Needham's seventh goal of the night - and his third of the season - with a screamer two minutes later.

The forward drove through into space before thumping a 35-yard rocket into the top left-hand corner, despite Brook getting a hand to it, 7-0.

Aiden Jolly then beat his man well before seeing a fierce shot off his own beaten behind well by Brooks down well at his near right-hand post on 73 minutes, seconds prior to Ed Barker's first time shot, following Luca Braddon's brilliant first time ball across, from 12-yards out being deflected just wide of the top right-hand corner.

A minute later though, the visitors forced a good diving save from Lawrence, who was alert to beat a fierce low shot behind at his near post. The young Woodpeckers were soon awarded a penalty on 75 minutes after a foul by Ed Barker.

Logan Boyd stepped up to curl a powerful spot-kick confidently past Lawrence, who went the right way, into the top right-hand corner, 7-1.

Needham however restored their 7 goal advantage with a goal of the season contender from Taylor Clark on 82 minutes. Aiden Jolly found Clark running in from 30-yards out. The midfielder took a touch before rifling a ferocious rocket into the very top right-hand corner, 8-1.

Clark again tried his luck at goal again two minutes later, the midfielder was fed into space before driving through with ease into the box to rifle a shot towards goal, albeit his effort cannoned wide off the outside face of the near post.

The latter then found Braddon free inside the box, the fellow goalscorer though fired a powerful shot just wide into the side netting on 87 minutes. Clark also created the last chance of a good victory for the home side in the first minute of stoppage time, his free-kick into the six yard box was punched away by Brooks off his line, only as far as Braddon whose fierce shot forced the stopper into a swift reflex stop to palm it behind his left-hand near post for a corner. 

The result makes it four straight wins on the bounce for the Reds, scoring 22 goals in those matches and conceding just 2 with two clean sheets, the young Marketmen will look to continue their fine form when they travel to Whitton United next Thursday (17th).

Chambers motors to five goals as young Marketmen hit Third Place Cornard For Eight.

A topsy-turvy 13 goal thriller ends in a thrilling 2nd league victory of the season for Needham Market Under-23s.

In a game, fittingly played a day after Halloween and 5 days from Bonfire Night, that saw the lead change hands a few times during the course of a goal frenzy encounter.

Nonetheless, the victory was important for the bottom side, with it taking them now just a point behind Debenham LC, who sit directly above them.

The young Marketmen won a corner after just 20 seconds on the clock, although Mo Igwebuike could only head the set-piece wide of the top near right hand corner. 

Sure enough, the young Reds deservedly broke the deadlock after 9 minutes, Dimitri Gayle threaded Seth Chambers through free down the left-hand side of the box, one on one with the onrushing Betts, where the forward clinically sidefooted his first of the night into the bottom far corner, 1-0 Needham.

Bouyed by the goal, the home side had two great chances in the space of a minute, the first saw Dimitri Gayle threaded through in acres of space down the left-hand side of the box, the winger smartly cut inside well only for his low tame shot to be comfortably gathered by Betts on 15 minutes.

Shortly after though, the young Marketmen had the ball in the net for the second time - albeit ruled off by an offside flag. Great play saw Igwebuike thread Gayle through down the left-hand side of the Ards' penalty area, though the winger was dispossessed by a defender the ball fell to Seth Chambers, who had came from an offside position. The striker picked up possession before laying the ball off to Igwebuike who, in acres of space on the edge of the box, smashed a low shot into the middle of the net via a deflection off Ollie Sims. 

In response, Cornard took advantage as the visitors duly equalised on 17 minutes, Charlie Lindoe was set through one on one with goalkeeper Finlay Shorten before finishing well for his fifth goal of the season into the bottom corner, 1-1. 

Needham meanwhile looked to hit back a minute later, as Taylor Clark latched onto the loose ball on the left-hand edge of the box, but for his shot to be deflected behind the near corner for a goal-kick. 

Up the other end on 23 minutes, Cornard glanced a dangerous left wing corner just wide of the top right-hand corner from close range at the far post, although the away side did take the lead a minute later, despite two brilliant saves from Finlay Shorten.

After captain Michael Brothers' fierce 30-yard shot, out on the right-hand side, was beaten away well by a flying save from Shorten at his top near corner, the follow up fell to a Blue shirt whose equally fierce shot towards Shorten's top right-hand corner was again palmed away by a terrific quick reaction stop from Shorten, albeit Scott Slotts was on hand to head home from point blank range, 1-2 Cornard.

The latest twist then arrived in the 26th minute when the away side were awarded a penalty, up stepped Scott Slotts, who beat just beat Shorten from the spot, who guessed right, as he placed a good spot-kick into the bottom right hand corner to make it 1-3.

The young Marketmen however went agonisingly close to reducing the deficit in the 31st minute, captain Seth Chambers was threaded through in space on the right-hand side of the box, one on one with Betts, though his shot was smothered well by the onrushing Betts, which fell to the arriving Ollie Fraser outside the box, whose shot went just wide of the vacant top left-hand corner. 

Three minutes later, Igwebuike tried his luck at goal once more, only this time the midfielder - who found space on the edge of the box - curled his shot narrowly over the top left hand corner. 

Down the other end meanwhile, Jake Phillips threaded Ben Stannard through into space down the right wing, the latter then smartly squared a dangerous ball across to goalscorer Slotts who arguably missed a golden opportunity, as his shot went over the bar from point blank range after 37 minutes.

But with two goals in a minute from Ollie Fraser, the home side quickly restored parity. The winger's first was arguably the best goal of the night, after being found by James Letts just inside his own half the Needham youngster duly exploited space as he drove through the visitors' half. Fraser then unleashed a 30-yard world class strike that ferociously crashed into the net off the underside of the crossbar, 2-3.

Sandwiches between Fraser's quickfire brace though was a great chance for Cornard straight from kick off. Ben Stannard's powerful strike from the right edge of the box forced Fin Shorten to fly up and tip the ball over his crossbar. 

The young Reds then broke quickly from the resulting corner, drawing back on level terms just before the break. Seth Chambers was threaded through brilliantly into acres of space down the left wing, the striker then drove through smartly before squaring the ball across on a plate, beating the diving Betts, providing Fraser, who was arriving at the back post, a tap in from five yards out, wiping out Cornard's lead in the process with his third goal of the campaign of the Under-23s.

Five minutes after the restart, Shorten was forced into action, beating away a fierce shot from the left-hand side of box down at his near post. 

Cornard though regained their lead on 57 minutes, a left wing free-kick was inadvertently headed back across the six yard box by Igwebuike, with Slotts on hand to fire home his third goal of the night, and 28th already for the season, from close range, 3-4. 

Their advantage though lasted just four minutes as Needham equalised for the second time, Seth Chambers joined his teammate Fraser on a brace after latching onto a brilliant through-ball from Clayton Osborn down the right-hand side, the striker then broke into the box and finished, in a carbon copy of his first goal, smartly through the onrushing 'keeper's legs into the bottom far corner, 4-4. 

If that wasn't enough, Dimitri Gayle latched onto a fantastic long ball from Shorten down the left wing before picking out an unmarked Taylor Clark with a good ball into the penalty area, but the midfielder's low shot from a tight angle was well saved by the diving Betts, smothering the ball away at his near post after 65 minutes. 

Sixty seconds later, captain fantastic Seth Chambers completed his hat-trick to give Needham the lead for the second time of the night, just five minutes after scoring his side's equaliser. Ollie Fraser cleverly lifted a long ball over the top, releasing Chambers past the defence and racing through on goal down the centre, drawing Betts off his line before cooly slotting home into the bottom far corner, 5-4 Needham. 

It was almost 6-4 to the hosts on 68 minutes, Taylor Clark exploited large pockets of space to drive through the Cornard half unopposed, but to see his 30-yard fierce shot blocked. 

Sure enough, three minutes later, the hosts were rewarded with their sixth goal of the night, Dimitri Gayle got in on the act with his 3rd goal of the season for the Under-23s, opening a two goal lead for his side in the process. After being threaded through one on one with Betts inside the box by Taylor Clark, the winger found space down the left-hand side of the box to finish brilliantly low across goal through the onrushing goalkeeper's legs, 6-4.

In response, goalscorer Charlie Lindoe whipped a dangerous ball into Shorten's six yard box, which the Needham shot-stopper advanced off his line well to vitally claim possession. 

Still the hosts weren't satisfied, Igwebuike lifted a great ball over the top to release Chambers free in acres of space down the left wing, this time rounding the advancing Betts but for his shot from a tight angle to be cleared by a well placed defender, keeping the scoreline at 6-4 after 77 minutes. 

A great chance went begging for Cornard four minutes later, Slotts couldn't quite add to his tally of three goals for the night, heading a right wing cross narrowly wide of the bottom far corner from close range. 

The woodwork then spared Clayton Osborn's blushes sixty seconds later, a great low dangerous ball into the six yard box saw Osborn try to pass the ball back to goalkeeper Shorten, who was relieved to see the ball rebound off the front base of the near post with Shorten gladly gathering the loose ball. 

Then came another flurry of goals with Man Of The Match Seth Chambers wrapping up his side's victory, while also notching his fifth goal of the night in doing so. James Letts'right wing cross picked out the forward, who was unmarked as he ghosted in at the far post to nod home into the bottom left hand corner from close range, 7-4 Needham.

The Needham captain quickly added his side's eighth goal in ruthless fashion, Dimitri Gayle threaded the forward through down the left wing with a terrific defence splitting pass, just inside the visitors' half. Chambers again drew Betts off his line before rounding the 'keeper to slot home from a tight angle into the vacant net. 

But with the last noteable action of a thrilling encounter, which was well worth the £5 admission fee, Cornard added a late consolation with their fifth goal, in the first minute of stoppage time. Slotts slotted home, his fourth goal of the night by confidently sending Shorten the wrong way from the penalty spot, into the bottom right hand corner for his sixth goal for the Under-23s of the season. 

The young Marketmen now have a week's break before their next game, due to Needham First Team's club history making Emirates FA Cup tie at League One Burton Albion on Saturday, with a trip to higher league Premier Division side Kirkley + Pakefield in the 3rd Round of the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Challenge Cup (7:45pm). Meanwhile, the Under-18s are in home action on Thursday (3rd November, 7:45pm), when they welcome Woodbridge Town in the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties Youth League Central Division.

Blues Development Team Continue Their Impressive Start With A Rampant Win

Young Blues make it 2 wins from 2 home matches, with Cameron Nicholls and Cruis Nydazayo scoring five goals between them.

Bury Town Under-23s move into second, four points behind leaders Heybridge Swifts after 3 wins from five matches with a 6-2 thumping over Suffolk rivals Felixstowe + Walton United U23s in the Isthmian Devlopment League North Division, on Halloween.

The home side were by far the more clinical of the two, with recent Bury signing Cameron Nicholls testing visiting goalkeeper Kieran Button after just two minutes. The forward picked up possession out on the right-hand side, only to see his low shot across goal well held by the aforementioned 'keeper. 

Great play from the young Blues almost fruited the opening goal of the night after just five minutes, Nicholls threaded Harvey Mills through smartly down the left wing, who in turn fed Ryan Jolland into space inside the box, though the midfielder blasted his shot wide into the near side-netting.

The home side then went close on 19 minutes, Cruis Nydazayo snuck a clever low ball across from the left-hand byline across to Max Willcox, though the defender's close range shot went just wide of the bottom far corner.

Soon after, Bury then looked to thread Nicholls through into acres of space down the left wing, although Button advanced off his line well to smother the ball.

While the home side were on top for the majority of the night, some good defending denied Bury the opening goal of the night after 21 minutes. A brilliant low cross in found Ryan Jolland in acres of space, but the midfielder's on target shot was crucially blocked by a defender from close range.

Two minutes later, a flying save from Bury goalkeeper Dan Stobbart thwarted Felixstowe from breaking the deadlock. A left wing cross found Tommy Smith whose dangerous close range header was brilliantly tipped away by the diving Stobbart across to his right-hand side.

That save proved to be pivotal, as Bury broke the deadlock on 24 minutes, Cameron Nicholls beat two defenders as he weaved through down the left-hand side of the box before slotting home neatly into the bottom near corner, 1-0 Bury.

A good save from Button denied Jolland from doubling Bury's lead a minute later, the midfielder latched onto a good through-ball down the right-hand side of the young Seasider's penalty area, only for his low shot to be smothered well by the diving 'keeper at his near post.

Nydazayo meanwhile tried his luck at goal in the 33rd minute, though his low shot from a tight angle was just smothered by Button down well at his near right-hand post.

Nydazayo continued to trouble the visiting defence a minute, the forward displayed some neat, quick footwork to spin and drive into space down the left-hand side of the box only for his low ball smashed across goal to be smothered behind for a corner.

At the other end meanwhile, Noah Harewood picked up possession in space inside the hosts' penalty area, but the midfielder's first time half-volley went just over Stobbart's crossbar on 36 minutes.

Bury on the other hand went into the break 3 goals to the good, courtesy of two terrific finishes from Cruis Nydazayo in the space of five first half minutes.

The forward ghosted past the defence to latch onto a great ball through, with just Button to beat, Nydazayo smartly thumped home a great strike into the top right-hand corner to deservedly double his side's advantage on 37 minutes.

Nydazayo then trumped that strike with an outrageous goal, after exploiting space down the left-hand side of the box,  the forward smashed home his second stunning goal of the night across goal into the top corner 3-0 Bury.

On the stroke of half-time, the hosts almost added a fourth goal, with an arriving Blue shirt just unable to connect with Cruis Nydazayo's brilliant ball across. Bury retained possession, albeit the resulting low fierce strike from the edge of the box was just parried away by a good diving save by Button, which just evades a blue shirt running in at point blank range.

The young Blues continued their momentum into the second half, with Button forced into action just two minutes after the restart. Jack Utting motored down the right wing before whipping a great cross into the six yard box, which just sailed over the head of the arriving Cam Nicholls. However, Jack Maher was on hand to latch onto possession at the far post, though his fierce low strike was tipped wide onto the side-netting by Button down at his near post.

The resulting corner found Max Willcox who leapt highest, only for the defender's effort to go just over off the top of the crossbar.

Four minutes later, Bury added their fourth goal of the night following a brilliant move from the home side. Cruis Nydazayo was threaded through brilliantly down the right wing to curl an audacious ball round the defence perfectly for the arriving Cameron Nicholls, who joined Cruis on a brace, by simply tapping home into the roof of the net free from close range, 4-0 Bury.

Button then denied the Blues with a great diving save, parrying away a low 54th minute effort, while a deflection denied Nydazayo from netting his third goal of the night two minutes later.
Nydazayo started the move, threading Ryan Jolland past the defence into acres of space, down the right wing, the latter broke through onto the byline where the midfielder returned the favour to the forward whose shot was deflected wide into the near side netting.

It was high fives for the young Blues on 67 minutes, with Cameron Nicholls completing his hat-trick in true poachers fashion. Theo Carter's right wing free-kick was flicked on by Ryan Jolland at the near post with Nicholls quickest to react, tapping home at the back post from point blank range.

With the three points virtually wrapped up, the home side took their foot off the gas two minutes later, with Dan Stobbart on hand to deny the visitors. After advancing off his line, the goalkeeper dived across well to his right to parry a great Felixstowe shot across goal over for a corner.

A crucial goal-line clearance meanwhile thwarted a sixth Bury goal in the 72nd minute, a great right wing cross from deep picked out Ethan Flack inside the box from 12-yards out and leapt highest ahead of Button, who had rushed off his line, though his brilliant goal bound looping header to be just cleared off the line by Sam Donnelly.

At the other end, two fantastic saves from Dan Stobbart in as many minutes preserved his clean sheet, after the goalkeeper spilt a dangerous left wing set-piece, the home stopper recovered well to smother Marcel Kiwumya's shot from close range on 73 minutes.
Stobbart though had to be at his best to deny Mo Sylla, the substitute drove through on goal only to see his clever shot tipped round the post by an outrageous flying save across to his left-hand side by Stobbart.

While Bury had already been clinical and rampant, Felixstowe had started to look a threat after the hosts' had taken off both Cam Nicholls and Cruis Nydazayo, albeit Bury did go close to a sixth goal in the 81st minute, as a brilliant left wing cross into the box forced Donnelly to clear the ball just over his top far corner for a corner.

Great pressure from Bury substitute Ethan Flack almost created a sixth goal for the home side on 88 minutes, after the forward charged down a defender's clearance out on the right wing, as the ball ricocheted towards the top near corner which Button was alert to claim at his near post.

Charlie Smith then thrashed a 30-yard shot over two minutes later, while the visitors did get on the scoresheet a minute into stoppage time.

Cameron Compton broke through one on one with Stobbart before smartly finishing low to the keeper's left hand side, 5-1.

Bury though struck back two minutes later, Ethan Flack fed Charlie Smith into space, the attacking midfielder then tried his luck at goal from 35-yards out, with his fierce strike at the top left-hand corner spilt into his own net by Button, 6-1 Bury.
Felixstowe on the other hand grabbed a second consolation in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Marcel Kiwumya made it 6-2 after his low shot was deflected past Stobbart into the bottom right hand corner.

An entertaining game then drew to a close, with the Blues' Under-23's, whose next two games see them travel to Haringey Borough and Brightlingsea Regent, next at home on Monday 21st November, against Brentwood Town. In the meantime the Under-18s travel to local rivals Walsham Le Willows on Thursday (3rd November), with their next home game against Saffron Walden Town on Monday 14th November.
