TURNER AT THE DOUBLE AS YOUNG BLUES DRAW WITH NEWMARKET
BY DREW KENDALL
Bury Town Under-18s and Newmarket Town U18s couldn't be separated in a even but action packed friendly at the Denny Bros Stadium.
The two sides shared four goals equally, which could've easily had been more had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping from both teams.
However there was nothing Bury goalkeeper Joe Wilson could've done to have prevented Newmarket opening the scoring with an absolute rocket of a strike in the seventh minute.
A flick on set Ben Landshoff haring through past the defence, although his first shot, at the bottom left-hand corner, thundered back off the face of the post. The rebound then fell back to the forward, whose equally ferocious strike flew into the top right-hand corner to give Newmarket the lead.
Bury meanwhile went close to equalising on 17 minutes, a great defence splitting pass released Jack Turner through on goal, one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but the forward's low shot was well saved by the onrushing goalkeeper. The rebound then fell to Kyran Cooper with his back to goal, but his shot was well blocked from point blank range.
At the other end, a great reaction save from Joe Wilson prevented Newmarket from scoring a second goal on 19 minutes, as brave goalkeeping saw the goalkeeper deny Brandon Norris who had raced through towards from close range, the forward's thundered shot was creeping into the bottom right-hand corner until Wilson reacted brilliantly to help the ball onto the outside off the near post and away to safety.
Great play from Bury meanwhile saw Jack Turner cleverly threaded the ball through the defence to an onside Kyran Cooper, who did well to retain possession after picking the pockets off the defender to proceed on into the penalty area. However, the forward's attempt to poke a shot underneath the advancing goalkeeper went just wide of the target on 25 minutes.
Bur goalkeeper Joe Wilson on the other hand was forced into another strong save a minute later, the shot-stopper getting down well to his right-hand side to deny a powerful strike from 30-yards out.
The chances continued to flow as Bury went agonisingly close to equalising on 27 minutes. Brilliant play from Kyran Cooper saw the Bury man beat his man brilliantly with pace down the right wing, his cross in then fell to Ben Ruddock but his close range low shot only drew an instinctive save out off the goalkeeper, getting his foot across to block.
At the other end, defender Jay Mitcham headed narrowly wide for Newmarket from close range, before his side did double their lead shortly after the half-hour mark.
Ben Landshoff yet again the scorer for the visitors, with another great finish, this time firing home into the bottom left-hand corner from close range, 2-0 to Newmarket.
Bury meanwhile went close to halving the deficit on 33 minutes, leaping well to direct a dangerously lofted free-kick well towards goal, although the header was comfortable for the goalkeeper Rudkin to claim.
Four minutes later, Bury however did reduce the deficit back to just one goal. Tom Pinyoun's inviting cross into the box found Callum Steed, whose touch found it's way to striker Jack Turner who squeezed a superb finish into the bottom right-hand corner from close range.
Looking to draw level quickly before the interval, Bury were marginally close to doing so on 41 minutes, after a header towards goal, past the goalkeeper, was cleared off the goal-line, though Bury's appeals for a hand being used in the process were waved away by the referee.
Newmarket's Callum Chambers-Shaw meanwhile was denied by some quick reactions by Joe Wilson to prevent the visiting skipper from pouncing on a mistake at the back. Having intercepted a Bury clearance deep in the Blues' half, Chambers-Shaw cut inside towards the edge of the box, though allowing time for Wilson to return to his goal and react instantly to dive low across to his left-hand corner to make a great catch.
Into the second half, the chances continued to flow - with Bury creating the more clear cut chances for the first portion of the half, as Charlie Wilson headed narrowly over the crossbar from close range on 56 minutes.
Bury though drew level thanks to some brilliant play on the hour mark, a dangerous ball squared onto Jack Turner in acres of space, from 6-yards out, was finished cleverly by the forward for his second, showing off some neat skill to flick the ball from behind him past the goalkeeper and into the bottom left-hand corner.
Some brilliant alert goalkeeping however, prevented Bury from going in front soon after, as Rudkin pulled off a great reflex save to parry Kyran Cooper's dangerous ball across the face of goal from reaching the onrushing Turner, hunting his hat-trick at what would've been an unguarded far post.
Cooper though went agonisingly close to putting Bury in front himself on 63 minutes, albeit sidefooting narrowly wide of the bottom corner from close range with the goal gaping.
Clinton Frank meanwhile saw a fierce strike deflected just wide for a corner after some good defending, whilst the header from the resulting set-piece couldn't quite be directed goalwards.
Newmarket on the other hand, drew a great save out off half-time substitute goalkeeper Liam Foreman on 69 minutes. The visitors looking to cap off a good passing move by finding the bottom corner from 18-yards out, but Foreman was equal to it, getting down well to parry it away.
Brandon Morris however headed an inch wide off the bottom corner for Newmarket on 72 minutes with both sides continuing to find a match winning goal.
Some superb goalkeeping however denied Jack Turner from netting a hat-trick shortly after, showing great reactions to cut down the angle and smother the low shot, one-on-one inside the box.
The game was so even, it was incredibly tough to separate the two teams, although the final two chances of the night both fell the way of the home side.
First Clinton Frank was denied from a brilliant save from the goalkeeper, having fired a shot on target from a fairly obscure angle on 74 minutes.
The final chance then arrived on 87 minutes, as the home side headed an audacious free-kick into the box mere inches over the crossbar.
At full-time, both teams shared a deserved draw after a thoroughly entertaining game at the Denny Bros Stadium.
