Four goals were shared equally at East Thurrock's Rookery Hill Ground meaning the 2nd Round Qualifying tie will be settled at Bloomfields on Tuesday night
Kevin Horlock made two changes from Tuesday's home draw with AFC Rushden & Diamonds as Jake Dye returned to right-back in place of Gareth Heath with Byron Lawrence returning to his more familiar Needham central midfield role, with Josh Pollard replacing the injured Daniel Morphew in a straight swap at centre-back.
East Thurrock quickly broke the deadlock just eight minutes in as Aileru exploited space to pick out the bottom corner, 1-0 to the hosts.
A great save from Needham goalkeeper Marcus Garnham four minutes later denied the Isthmian Premier Division from adding to their lead, flying across to his far left-hand side to tip Johnny Ashman's fierce strike over the crossbar.
Up the other end, Needham began to grow into the tie well - as the Southern Premier Central Division outfit hit the post in the twentieth minute. Callum Page whipped an audacious 25-yard free-kick over the defence, finding Keiran Morphew who leapt like a salmon only to see his header crash back into play off the front base of the right-hand upright.
The visitors then thought they had drawn level two minutes later as Luke Ingram caught the keeper out with a clever lob from a long range acute angle, with the keeper parrying it off the goal-line by mere centimetres.
Great play from Needham saw the Suffolk side go close to equalising as Callum Page's corner fell to Josh Pollard inside the box, the defender cleverly fed the ball onto Luke Ingram in space but the striker could only poke low and wide of the target as hosting Rooks ended the first half a goal in front.
Two minutes after the restart though, Needham began on the front foot as pinball in Thurrock's penalty box started after Ben Fowkes' shot was deflected, leading to a mix up within the home defence which saw the defender partially clear the rebound ahead of the onrushing 'keeper towards Kyle Hammond, but he couldn't get there first with the net gaping.
But Needham did restore parity on 49 minutes, Luke Ingram was threaded through free inside the box, where having ran past the defender the forward then drew Janata off his line so he could square it across to Ben Fowkes in space from point blank range to tap into an empty net, 1-1!
Ingram almost turned the game on it's head with what would've been a great goal two minutes after the hour mark, the joint Needham longest serving current player was threaded through inside the box by Kyle Hammond, who similarly drew the goalkeeper off his line, but this time to fire a rocket towards the top near corner, only for it to go just over via the top off the crossbar.
That agonising chance was closely followed by Josh Pollard's looping header that went just over the crossbar, whilst just after Garnham had tipped over Hernandez's free-kick, Needham did take the lead with 15 minutes remaining.
A well taken goal again came courtesy of a Luke Ingram assist, having skinned Gench the Needham top scorer for the current season then cut the ball back to Noah Collard whose strike was deflected home into the bottom right-hand corner, 2-1 Needham.
The home side though forced a replay with eight minutes left of normal time as Ben Wyss was found in space by Necati Gench to head home into the top left-hand corner, 2-2.
In response, Needham had a decent chance to grab the winner in the 85th minute as Josh Pollard peeled away well only to flick Byron Lawrence's dangerous corner narrowly wide.
Needham's unbeaten run stretches to four games, ahead of the rematch on Tuesday.
