A record attendance of 797 for a competitive fixture at Greens Meadow witnessed hosts Stowmarket Town pick up their inaugural win in their maiden Isthmian League North Division season over a good Bury Town side, as they maintained their 100% home winning start to the 2021-22 season, after their 4-0 win over fellow Isthmian North Division side Witham Town in the Emirates FA Cup two weeks ago.
This much anticipated local A14 Derby however was practically settled after the first half after costly mistakes cost the visitors.
The chances in the opening stages fell to visiting Bury, as a great long crossfield ball picked out Ryan Stafford free inside the box whose effort forced Stow goalkeeper James Bradbrook off his line well to tip it behind for a corner after just 12 minutes.
The visitors then drew another good, albeit fairly routine, save from Bradbrook a minute later. Jake Chambers Shawn's corner picked out Baris Altintop free from 12-yards out whose great header needed tipping over for a corner.
Up the other end however, a sloppy foul for Baris Altintop on Stow forward Anthony Spyrou in a dangerous position 25-yards from the Blues goal on 18 minutes gave Stow an opportunity to break the deadlock.
That they did in clinical fashion as former Ipswich Town youngster Chris Casement curled a stunning free-kick into the top right-hand corner to the delight of the home support, 1-0 to the Old Gold and Blacks after 20 minutes.
The goal was ultimately crucial to how the game would then play out, as Stow were beginning to grow into it just as the foul took place, and because of which the momentum sparked the home side into the ascendancy, though Bury's Chambers, Shaw saw an inviting ball into to the penalty spot punched away well by James Bradbrook diving off his line on 22 minutes.
Stow however quickly looked to hit their opposition on the break as Kane Munday threaded Anthony Spyrou through inside the box but his shot was helped just wide of the far post by Sam Blair guarding his near post, whilst the home side then fired just wide of the bottom corner from a dangerous position just seconds later.
Just before the half-hour mark, Stow raced into a 2-0 lead in clinical fashion as some questionable defending was punished by former Norwich City youngster Anthony Spyrou, who smashed home into the bottom far corner, past current Norwich City loanee Blair.
Bury however were forced into an early change soon after as ex-Ipswich Town amongst others former professional Carlos Edwards replaced Ollie Snaith who looked to have picked up an injury. And the substitute's long throw into the danger area needed dealing with, as Bradbrook once again patrolled his penalty area with authority - punching the ball clear.
Bury though looked to test Bradbrook eleven minutes before the interval as Cemal Ramadan's lobbed effort would've dipped underneath the crossbar had it not been for a fairly routine, but nonetheless good, stop from the Stow shot-stopper.
Stowmarket though were awarded a crucial penalty on 36 minutes, which would prove quite pivotal in how the game would pan out, after Reggie Lambe was tripped from behind by Ryan Stafford - who was booked in the process.
Up stepped Jack Ainsley who duly dispatched the spot-kick cooly into the bottom right-hand corner, sending Blair the wrong way to make it 3-0 to the clinical home side.
Anthony Spyrou almost added to the hosts lead on 42 minutes, as the scorer of Stow's second goal flashed a ferocious shot just an inch wide from an acute angle, whilst on-loan Norwich City goalkeeper Sam Claire thwarted Stow from extending their lead two minutes later.
Josh Curry's ferocious strike from just outside the box required a strong diving dace from Blair, though the follow up was netted into the empty net from an offside position.
Stow nonetheless went into the back with a fairly healthy first half advantage, with Bury not really looking like scoring.
Had it not been for another good save from Blair, further damage could've been done to the visiting Blues as Chris Casement's out swinging ball needed tipping away from Blair.
Cemal Ramadan meanwhile did continue to pose a threat for the visitors, albeit not quite as much as the visitors would have hoped as his self set up overhead kick looped up comfortably for Bradbrook to save on 48 minutes. The striker then looked to test the goalkeeper again two minutes later, as his low volley from Ryan Stafford's brilliant long ball was straight at Bradbrook from close range.
Midfielder Evan Collard meanwhile went agonisingly close to getting onto the score-sheet as the Stow man fired just over the crossbar five minutes later, whilst James Bradbrook was on hand to deny Bury once more and preserve his clean sheet with 21 minutes remaining.
Substitute Angus Mills did provide a spark to the visiting forward line as his reverse pass to return the ball back to captain Olly Hughes saw the fan favourite's cutback smothered by Bradbrook off his line well.
Bury's best chance of the afternoon though fell to Cemal Ramadan as the game entered the final ten minutes. The striker caught James Bradbrook off his line as his rocket of a strike from the half way line flew an inch over the crossbar.
Ex-Ipswich Town professional Carlos Edwards' long throw meanwhile found Ryan Stafford dangerously near the right-hand post, though the full-back's flick on was punched away by Bradbrook ahead of Ramadan on 84 minutes.
Bury though did have the ball in the net four minutes later, only to be ruled out for offside as Ryan Horne's long range free-kick was pinpoint to an offside Cemal Ramadan in space at the back post to cushion a cool first time half volley into the far corner.
In stoppage time however, a dangerous Stow corner whipped in across the face of goal required tipping away by Blair, whilst Reggie Lambe's 30-yard fierce low strike needed beating away by Blair down to his left-hand side.
Stowmarket's start to life in the Isthmian North Division continues in fine form with a 3-0 Derby win.
