Needham Market Women pick up their first win of the new 2021-22 Eastern Regions Women's League Division One North season with a deserved win over Newmarket Town on the Bloomfields 3G.
A very entertaining encounter at Bloomfields saw five goals scored on a Sunday afternoon where Needham backed up a 3-3 away draw at Whittlesey Athletic with a win in their first home game of the new season.
It took only a minute for the home side to go close to bundling home the opening goal of the afternoon as Ellie Rossiter drove through down the right wing before squaring across to Jo Brawn in the centre, though the ball bounced off the new signing and an inch wide of the post.
Up the other end meanwhile, Newmarket found space to fire a 25-yarder narrowly wide of the bottom corner two minutes later, whilst Danni Clarke got down well to her left to parry behind a good strike at the expense of a corner soon after.
The woodwork however thwarted Needham from breaking the deadlock in the tenth minute, having been threaded through by a defence splitting pass from Abbie Fisher, Jo Brawn's fierce shot from inside the box then thundered off the inside of the post before bouncing off the goalkeeper and back onto the upright before rebounding back into play.
But it was 1-0 to the Marketwomen four minutes later, as Newmarket failed to clear Lois Balfour's corner Jo Brawn squared it across on a plate for Ellie Rossiter from close range to finish cooly into the near bottom right-hand corner.
It was almost 2-0 to the home side though in the 20th minute, though it was offside as Lois Balfour took the corner short to captain Nicola Henderson, who whipped in a great ball into the offside Lina Naglib to tap in from close range.
Up the other end though, a good save from Danni Clarke denied Newmarket as the visitors' striker drove into the box only to see their low poked shot saved by Clarke, who then denied the Jockeys from close range shortly after.
Clarke's opposite number however was forced into a good save to deny Ellie Rossiter on 27 minutes, as the forward was threaded through driving into the box her fierce shot at the top corner was well caught by the shot-stopper.
Two minutes later, Rossiter then looked to pick out Balfour with a great cross into the striker peeling away at the near post but the ball in just evaded the latter.
Balfour meanwhile went agonisingly close to doubling her side's lead on 35 minutes as the striker curled an 20-yard exquisite strike an inch wide of the top far corner, whilst Jo Brawn went just as close just seconds later.
The latter ran through onto the edge of the box where the recent recruit smashed an inch wide of the bottom corner.
Arguably, Needham's dominance warranted a second goal as Ellie Rossiter was next to test the visitors backline as she weaved inside the box only to see her strike saved by the goalkeeper.
Five minutes before the interval, the woodwork denied the Marketwomen from making it 2-0 once more, as Lois Balfour's 25-yarder thundered back into play off the face of the crossbar, having caught the goalkeeper off her line.
The Needham striker however was then denied by the Newmarket goalkeeper a minute later, who saved the shot well from inside the box.
Nicola Henderson, having spotted the 'keeper slightly off her line, then tried her luck at goal on 44 minutes, with a powerful strike just outside the box only for the goalkeeper to take a strong catch as Needham lead by a goal to nil at the break.
Into the second half, the woodwork twice prevented the Marketwomen from doubling their advantage a minute after the restart, Jo Brawn threaded through Lois Balfour inside the box, but again the striker's powerful strike thundered off the face of the crossbar. The rebound meanwhile fell to Ellie Rossiter but her strike from an acute angle also thundered off the crossbar.
As if like buses, Needham quickly raced into a much deserved 3-0 lead with 2 goals in as many minutes.
First, Nicola Henderson teed up Jo Brawn free inside the box to dispatch it into the bottom corner, before the latter soon had a brace as Brawn nodded home Ellie Rossiter's audacious pinpoint right wing cross into the top corner at the back post, 3-0 after 64 minutes.
Before you knew it, both sides then added to the scoresheet further with a goal apiece in the following six minutes as two good saves in succession from Clarke saw the ball fall to Freya Turner who finished well from close range into the vacant top left-hand corner, to make it 3-1 arguably against the run of play, but a goal you could argue from the visitors perspective that they deserved.
Needham however were awarded a penalty on 69 minutes as Jo Brawn was brought down whilst looking for her hat-trick. Abbie Fisher stepped up though and duly smashed it past the 'keeper, who guessed right, and into the middle left-hand corner, 4-1.
Albeit the free-kick was given anyway, the crossbar denied Needham substitute Molly Hall from adding to the Marketwomen's lead on 73 minutes as she beat the goalkeeper to a ball in the box but did accidentally catch the shot-stopper.
The goalkeeper however was unable to continue after that, as the Newmarket number 6 took her place in goal, with her first piece of action in between the sticks seeing the stand-in goalkeeper parry away a fierce Rossiter 25-yard strike in the 80th minute.
Needham then shot just wide two minutes later, whilst the woodwork denied Newmarket from halving the deficit on 84 minutes as the visitors' ball across was diverted onto the post by the away side from close range.
Three minutes later though, a goal-line clearance denied Molly Hall from getting on the scoresheet, as the substitute flicked an audacious Lois Balfour corner goal wards.
In stoppage time, another Balfour dangerous set-piece almost saw Needham add to their advantage once more, as Leilah Hansen poked her shot just wide from close range.
The Marketwomen will look to back up the victory when the visit Cambridge City's Development side on Sunday (5th September).
